Ugh - Where do I start? Right out of the gate, the "driving range" is about 100 yards long where they are you to use "irons only." Thank goodness the small bucket of balls we got was free. The signs on this course are so bad that we couldn't find the FIRST tee. We had to go back and ask - and we were directed to go through the neighborhood. Most of the tee boxes (men's and ladies') were full of crabgrass and the fairways were equally unkempt. We lost so many balls it was ridiculous - even when I hit a NICE shot right at the pin, the ball rolled across the green and off the back - never to be seen again. I am not an all-over-the-place kind of hitter, either. I even found a ball on the windshield of my CAR in the parking lot. There are fairly frequent water coolers - - - but no bathrooms on the course. We hit this place on a Friday and got a 2 for 1 deal - and thank goodness we did because i used up EVERY junk ball - and brand NEW balls - in my bag. The clubhouse looked nice and the facilities there were nice - and though we didn't buy lunch, the prices looked very reasonable at the turn. All that said, I don't think I'd ever go back to this course again.
At $29 a round, this course was okay. The interesting layout and the challenge of a real penalty for missed shots made up for the overall poor condition - tight, forested fairways, water hazards, elevation changes, and creative short-game situations. BUT, the new highway came through and ruined the best hole, conditions are generally worse, and the increase to $49 renders it not worth the price of admission. The greens were patchy and inconsistent, the fringes not puttable, and the tee areas fairly chewed up. The irons-only driving range and tiny practice green are subpar. The food used to be great, but since the grill was closed when I was there, who knows anymore?
Overall, Cross Creek is a nice golf course with some very interesting holes, for those who don't mind playing a tight, tree-lined course. It's not for everybody, but those who like it, keep coming back.Staff are a big plus - very friendly, and the price is set just right to make this one of the best values in the DC area. On the downside, the practice facility isn't very good - just enough to go hit a few balls to loosen up.Unfortunately, this has been a tough summer for the course. Tees and greens have suffered; several greens are bad enough to affect play. On the other hand, this is probably true lots of places so don't rule it out.If you've never played Cross Creek, give it a try. If you are fussy about conditioning, wait until cooler weather in September.Note that my "average" rating is based on current course conditions. I would rate it higher were it in better shape.
