I absolutely hated reading Walden in high school, but when we noticed it on the map, we had to see if it was really all that good, and it was! The walking path gave great views around the pond. The water was crystal clear and you could see the bottom! The remaining elements of the old cabin remain and people have paid tribute by building cairns. We took the time to build one as well. There seemed to be just a little magic about the nature here. It almost seems to stand still, but a light breeze reminds you it doesn't. I really recommend this for a nature walk or to have a better understanding of American literature.
Its nice place especially in summers. Lots of trees. Kids had great fun in swimming.Only not good , when there is too much humid, due to area gets smell.Otherwise, nice trails and of course again and again visiting this place rejuvenate you.
I am a HUGE Thoreau buff and let me tell you. It was an amazing experience to see where he lived and the pond we spoke so highly off. The sight is amazing, it's almost as if he is still here, beckoning you to come and join him in his love of the outdoors. I never saw any sign of litter and the pond was so pristine it makes you want to sit and stay forever. Unfortunately, we had to go, but we went to the Walden Pond Shop and got some trinkets for home. Great little store with a wonderful woman behind the counter.
Walden Pond is a nice swimming area. You have to pay to park, but not to use the beach. There is a hiking trail all the way around the pond. There are many areas where you can swim besides the main beach, so if you want more seclusion it's available. The Thoreau cabin is an interesting place to visit. It's tiny, and he lived there and even entertained. You can easily view it on the way from the parking lot to the beach.
Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from 1845-47 and was inspired to write "Walden." He wished to live 'deliberately.' What a spectacular thought! He didn't want to approach his death, discovering he hadn't lived. Wise words for all of us. We were both surprised to find that Walden Pond was much larger than either of us expected. It's incredibly pretty and serene.; we wished we'd had more time to explore and perhaps have a picnic. There is a charge to park, but if you kindly ask the gentleman if you can just stop for a moment to take a few photos, he will smile and nod yes. Thank you!
Icon New England spot. I'd suggest going when in the Fall or Spring, or late on a summer day. Take a hike around the pond, and find a spot on the other side of the pond to relax, away from the crowds.
It's a historical location and now run by the MA state parks organization, you now must pay for parking, just like the national parks.
Yes, I went. Actually by accident very early one morning on the way to something else. Its lovely but so incredibly beaten down. The poor shoreline has been abused by all our feet-mine included. I also learned that as this is a "kettle pond" the water gets very polluted from all the swimmers. Seems to me that at the very least they should steer the swimmers to other places so visitors can focus more on the landscape and history. The little cabin is very interesting. The story of how this was a typical size for the railroad laborers who also lived near the pond was a new one for me. All those romantic notions of Thoreau alone out in the woods are not entirely accurate- he had neighbors and there were few trees! So the purpose of this site is for people to learn about its history and in that case, I did. But as a lover of nature, i wish that not so many people did what I did. So don't go!
I would definitely recommend a walk around here! It's such a beautiful, quiet place, and the scenery is amazing.
We visited Walden Pond on a Fall day. The pond is a lovely site. We first parked and visited a replica of Thoreau's cabin adjacent to the parking lot. A Thoreau actor was answering questions to a school group. It was interesting to hear some of his perspective. I would recommend getting his full presentation if possible. We took a trail but didn't see Thoreau's original cabin site. Instead, we ended up walking another path, the one that circles Walden Pond close to the water. We stopped and took pictures and really enjoyed this trek. We also visited the gift shop and bought some items.
Being as I was staying in Concord with friends, this was a nice place to go for a gorgeous walk with my puppy. You can even see the site where Thoreau's cottage supposedly stood. I love Concord, it is a special town.
Walden Pond is one of those places that I have often thought of visiting, yet I have never been there - until a few weeks ago when I spent some time visiting the literary landmarks of Concord. The place is not only a monument to Henry David Thoreau, who lived and worked here, but also serves as a recreational park for the people of Concord, so off-season might be the best time to visit, unless you want the shore covered with sunbathers. The pond isn't that small...and is reached via trails that lead from the parking lots. En route to the pond is a replica of the small cabin that Thoreau used while here. You can also follow a hiking trail to the site of the original cabin at the other end of the pond. Though, the trail is well-worn, the footing can be uneven and the hike is just about a mile, so you should be good on your feet if you choose this option.Everybody should take the opportunity to visit this wonderful site; it's a place to remember and reflect. Don't miss it.
We enjoyed a morning trip to Walden Pond. Take a blanket and enjoy sitting on the shore or wading a bit. There are forest paths to walk. There is a replica of Thoreau's cabin and markers at the original site if you choose to take a 15 minute or so walk up to it. It was restful and fun to watch some young families play with their toddler and some school children explore a bit. We could push our daughter in a wheel chair to the main beach site and she could use her crutches to get further onto the beach. On some days the place can get crowded and they will limit those allowed in so go early or on less vacation type days. It is rather expensive to park--10$ for out of state plates so go when you can take enough time to make the drive and parking worthwhile. You would want a minimum of a couple of hours to enjoy the place, more if you want to do more walking or exploring or just down time in a lovely spot. You are close to some decent eating establishments in West Concord and Concord. The the next time we visit the area we are hoping to spend a little more time and do a little more walking and exploring.
Warning! Walden Pond closes when 1,000 people have entered so if, like us, you plan to go on a hot weekend day, even though it's not technically summer any more, you won't be allowed in once 1,000 people have showed up ahead of you. *sigh*So we went back a couple of days later and we got in. Gorgeous! I'm grateful that this place has been kept fairly pristine and unchanged. There's something thrilling about walking on earth that you know famous people have trod upon, too. But apart from the historical significance and the replica of Thoreau's cabin, it's a refreshing site with well-marked paths, people enjoying a swim or fishing, taking a leisurely walk and spotting some chipmunks, squirrels and even a blue jay. Great finds for someone who's not local.
