This man-made lake offers fishing, boating, camping, and swimming. There is a State Park that is clean and maintained. Whether for a day trip or a week you will be very glad you came to see this lake. There are trails to hike, swimming, fishing to be had. Highly recommend it.
My wife and I camped here in a travel trailer October 4-11, 2013. The campground has three loops- one full hook up and two water/electric. The FHU loop sites are larger and have generally better views of the lake. There3 is also a rental trailer in the FHU loop. The sites are level, shady and well spaced for privacy. The rolling hills and trees are beautiful. This is definitely a great place to visit in the fall The reflection of the trees in the lake, sunsets andsunrises are worth a trip. Just three miles from the park is Powhatan State Historical Park. The restored buildings, especially the courthouse are definitely worth a half day. All hiking trails are well maintained and easy walking. The trail around the lake can be hiked many times and not get boring. A wonderful park I highly recommend.
I guess 182TimT was having a pouting day and feeling sorry for himself. Hubby and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lake Charles State Park. Quiet, peaceful, good fishing and great hikes. No matter what "color" you are - there is a good time to be had by all at Lake Charles State Park.
the locals are really nice. if ur not black. the park is really nice, but there r snakes every where you go.the camp site need a little up dating but it is arkansas and guess we should be happy with what we get. every body gave us mean looks,i guess they r not used to seeing colored folk down here. but we made the best of it. this summer we plan on having r family reunion here, bet they will really love that.
I haven't gotten to camp at Lake Charles yet but we have had many outings there. We usually go in the summer to BBQ and swim so I have never gotten over to the other side till just recently. We found a trail in the far end and it was really a pleasant little hike. Seen a variety of birds and some small furry critters, didn't get a good look at them. Lake Charles is a lot bigger than I had realized. I look forward to a camping trip there soon.
Lake Charles State Park is worth the drive to Powhatan. The parks in Arkansas are beautiful. More so than Missouri. Don't get me wrong, the parks in Missouri are very nice. But Arkansas parks seem as if the come from another world. You can see the lake from anywhere.
I love Lake Charles State Park. The campsites are all shaded and most have at least some view of the lake. Some campsites, especially the 50 amp sites have excellent lake views. We tent camped here in July 2012. The nature center has a very cool collection of local snakes, turtles, fish, and other wildlife for viewing including an alligator. The swimming beach is nice and family friendly. My only complaint is that there was no soap in the restrooms at the bath houses.
We just spent 3 nights at Lake Charles State Park. a majority of the sites are shaded. The lake is a fairly small but nice fishing lake, it is next to the Black River a bit out of the main path so it's a nice get away camp destination. They have a nice beach front for family swimming, a nature center and boat launch. There were a lot of fishing campers there and some would head out in the evening hours. This is a very well kept up park, the park people are very friendly and seem to want you to enjoy your visit with them. The park is quite and a very relaxing area. The bathroom facilities were cleaned each day and we never had to worry that we'd need a roll of toilet paper when we went to the john. Check in was quick, they had an ice machine at the office that you could purchase bag ice. We drove over by the swimming beach one day and there were quite a few families with children swimming and they also had playground with it being utilized by families with small children also. What can I say, Arkansas has some very nice State Parks and they do try and keep them clean and in nice condition. Lake Charles is one that I would not hesitate to return to and will our stay was very enjoyable. Thank you park staff of this fine camping destination.
Great for day trip with the family, other things to see while in the area.
