I have lived in Paris my entire life, and sadly because I see this place every day I have overlooked it many times. It was not until I moved to Washington for a few years, then moved back, that I could truly appreciate it's beauty. We have a few dedicated persons each year who make it their duty to decorate the courthouse and square into a winter wonderland. Even without snow (which we seldom have in our area) it feels like Christmas when you walk over. The parade and ceremonial lighting of the courthouse is something to see if you are in the area. It almost feels like you step back in time.
We have family that live in and around Paris and this is where my husband proposed to me on Christmas Eve in 2007. The courthouse is always beautifully decorated for Christmas. The Christmas parade and square are fun to visit to get in the holiday spirit. It is a great family event since Santa is there and there are always many Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and organizations. We love to see the lights every year.
We were driving through Paris, AR, on our way to Mt. Magazine State Park. We stopped for a short visit in Paris, just because of county courthouse and Courthouse Square. The courthouse and surrounding square were decorated for the holidays yet and we were awestruck. It is simply beautiful, and tastefully done. We loved the lights on all of the buildings; but even without this great holiday display, we found the courthouse a memorable and imposing building. It was too late to tour the inside, unfortunately. The square itself is delightful and a winner in my book for small town squares. Not many like this anymore. I commend the county and town for keeping this historical square and courthouse intact!
