This is a great way to get out and see the park and put some distance between you and the crowds. Drive down to Savage Creek and park you car (it's the farthest you can drive you own vehicle). My buddy and I hiked north along Savage creek for a mile or so, and then cut west, straight up the mountain slope. It was a bit of a slog up the slope, but lots of fun. Once you crest the top, you're good to go. We didn't really follow a trail, but it's hard to get lost out there as long as you keep your wits about you. Great day hike. Great way to get away from the tourists.
the call of the wild and lovely visions of fantastic views will never leave my memories. Showing all my friends and family the wonderful photos we were able to take just takes their breaths away too
Trails are hard to find in the park, but we bushwacked some in the way up and maybe found a social trail after about 20 minutes. We were looking for dall sheep (as our bus driver told us they are frequently in the area). After over an hour, we were nearing the summit and getting discouraged as we did not see any. We persisted on the way up and headed along a ridge toward Savage River and finally found 6 dall sheep!!! We got very close to them and took some amazing pictures. We could not find the social trail to get back down and did some crazy bushwacking. VERY fun!
