I hiked off the regular trails. The terrain can be challenging, but is a lot of fun. Just make sure people know where you are.
A chance of lifetime trip to Anchorage to visit expecting daughter and Army officer son-in-law in April 2013. Breathtaking...Gorgeous...Majestic are understated words to describe the natural beauty of the Chugach. In April, there was still snow and cold-but a different cold than Texas. The way of life for everyone there is completely different there; so unique. Roads were in great shape to drive and just look at God's creations with wonderment and awe. The 5 days we stayed there seemed to race by; that was our ONLY disappointment for the trip. Getting to see the moose wander about the forest ( and in town ) was also another thrill to add to our growing list of memorable events. Hope someday to go back and visit this treasure of Chugach in Alaska.
Well it's not the Tongass but stop in anyway. I would suggest Cordova for anyone looking for a secluded vacation in a beautiful area without a lot of people around.
This place is amazing! if you ever get the chance to rent a car or RV and drive across this part of Alaska then do it! wildlife can be found everywhere, amazing photography opportunities and endless hours of enjoyment on the road
The guided hike we took was great. Guide was knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. I am not a hiker and the guide made sure that the hike went at my pace and rested when she could see I was getting tired
Took a hike on 4+ inches of packed snow into the valley surrounded by magnificent mountains. X-country skiers, hikers, dogs and mountain bikers loving on the trails in the area. Views of Mt. McKinley/Denali were breath taking. Also fantastic views of Anchorage. Definitely a must do/see.
A truly beautiful place, be aware of your surroundings. Alaska is wild and one should never forget that. I saw a lot of wildlife and a lot of wild Alaska.
Easy access to various parks, lakes, trails. We did day trips from Anchorage and went to different sites. Easy trails to walk on.
I drive here winter and summer taking thousands of photos. It is awesome in the autumn. The wildlife is abundant and beautiful. Take your time and enjoy this wonderful area of Alaska. It is a good idea to have an extra 5 gallon can of gas, oil, water, snack food, coats and a medical kit in your car any time you are driving in Alaska. Help can be a few hours away and cell phone service in remote areas is not dependable. When Alaska wilderness is taken over by man and all services are abundant, it will not be the wild beauty it is now.
Pointing my rental car south to Homer, I was mesmerized by the beauty in the Chugach National Forest. A photo op at every turn. Thank goodness for all of the pull-off areas...get the camera! I have never seen anything so gorgeous. Something you have to drive thu...bucket list material for sure.
We drove thru the forest into the Kenai peninsula. The road is in good repair, but well known for accidents (saw none) Lakes, glaciers, meadows, mountains, who can ask for anything more?
Chugach national forest is beautiful. The location very near to Anchorage is fine too. We hav been at some lakes and also in the wilderness to the North east.Chugach also stretches to Kenai peninsula.
wonderful trails to hike along, as long as you watch for the moose of course. the drive is spectacular. I couldn't imagine any better view.
Really beautiful, the Chugach lures you to see it up close and personal because it rims the city of Anchorage and is so accessible. Rent a car and go see it!
A warm sunny day was the stting for a several hour hike, Great views and only a few other hikers. I wished we had seen more wildlife, but obviously that is hit or miss. Very well maintained paths and trails for all levels and amounts of time. A not to be missed experience
