If you are coming to Alaska for any outdoor experiences, your best stop to get information is Alaska Public Lands Information Center right in downtown Anchorage. It hosts map displays and general information about places to go hike, camp and bike in Alaska. Check out the short movies showing in the auditorium and children interpretitive activities.
The title doesn't give a clue that there is actually an interesting wildlife museum inside. Throughout our Yukon and Alaska travels this was the only place we got close to a grizzly bear. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) he was stuffed.
Very helpful staff. Lots of info for planning longer visits to more remote areas. Maps and brochures available. A variety of videos to watch on the big screen. Seems they offer tours and more activities in the summer months.
As this is a federal buiding, don't forget you photo id.Great program of films and guided tours.I saw the film and walking tour on the 1964 earthquake which as very informative. Ironically there as a 2.4 tremor (which I felt) during the time I was watching the film.Exhibition on the national parks and culture was well worth seeing. There is no entry fee, but donations are welcome. Gift shop on site.
This is in the old federal building, and has many alaskan animals on display. There are free movies to watch, maps to pick up, even a scavenger hunt for the youngsters. Ask the help there about maps, where to camp, what to see, and they'll help you find just the place to visit. You do have to go through a metal detector since this is a federal building. But it is worth it.
This review of mine will be helpful for those of thinking Alaska for first time.I had opportunity to visit Alaska last October with my wife. We are in late 30's now. We stayed there for 2 weeks. During our visit , we spent time in Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Girdwood, Whitler & Talkeetna. We hired a car ( 4WD) and drove almost 1800 kms around Alaska in 2 weeks. I have been to many cities and countries around the world since I started travelling last 15 years. I must say, that Alaska is country that I would certainly go again, no matter what ! Bearing in mind that Imy home country is located about 26 hours of flights away from Anchorage. We both really enjoyed every minute in Alaska and it has been a wonderful holiday ... Ooops we are not newly married couple. Married for 10 years now. I am trying to say that it was "wonderful " purely because of its nature & sceneries. The wildlife, salmons in its nature, the roads , the village cities and its nature, the environmnet, the weather , the glaciers, the sea villages , the people and etc etc, everything is so wonderful.Cause I am bored with big city life for many years and a place like Anchorage and other towns around it really made us felt like gem.Try to get a car and its quite easy to drive around with a mapStop wherever you like and drive as much as possible so you will see many different parts of the country. You have all your freedom and time.I was really sad to leave then and never realised how fast the 2 weeks had passed. !. For those keen to venture new places on earth , Alaska will not disappointment you.If you fond of nature, wildlife, mountains, glaciers & scenic villages ...... way to go !!!
This is a federal building so you will need to go through security first. It's free though. Good information on wildlife, history, and culture in various areas of Alaska. Hands on exhibits for the kids (passport booklet). The ranger invited to watch one of the short movies (17 min) about Denali and I'm glad we did. It was beautiful. The ranger also suggested additional walks and sights to see. Totally worth going and is directly across the street from the information center.
For the first time visitor to Alaska, the Public Lands Information Center is a must stop to get an orientation of Alaska's wilderness. Located downtown, it makes for an easy stop. The Ranger on duty was exceptionally friendly and helpful with information about the local and regional parks. Their wildlife film we saw was well made and educational, definitely worth spending the short viewing time. The numerous and different stuffed wildlife animal displays were nicely displayed. "Reindeer dog" is even available from 2 regular hotdog vendors outside on the sidewalk by the Center's entrance.
this visitor center has many films that rotate in a short time. See them al as well as the exhibitsl. well worth a visit.
We needed an appropriate vehicle for 7 people to see the beautiful sites in Wasilla, Denali, & Girwood Ak. Several places I called wanted a lot of money for rental van. We callled A -1 Car Rental in Anchorage Ak & they were extremely helpful. I wanted a mini van and they said that would not be the right choice since we had 7 people and that we needed a van that would be appropriate for the road conditions in Denali.and be comfortable. They offered to give the same price for a larger van because they did not want to get stuck and be unhappy with the mini van. Well we still chose the mini van but realized that we made the the wrong choice and should have chosen the van they recommended. We called them and they said no problem bring back the mini van and we have a larger van waiting for you for the same price as the mini van. The van was affordable and reliable. We had no problems cruising the parks highway. We will definitly use them again and recommend them for anyone needing a rental vehicle when in AK. KOber
This is located in Downtown Anchorage across the road from the visitors centre. We initially visited to use the bathrooms (including having to be security checked to enter the building) but ended up staying for several hours and looking at the displays as well as going to watch a number of the video presentations about the history of Anchorage. The one detailing the events surrounding the big earthquake was most interesting. This is well worth a visit if you want to find out as bit about the background of the area. As a Geography teacher I found it most interesting. This attraction is free.
Downtown Anchorage across the street from the tourist info cabin. Wonderful information, maps, taxidermy of local fauna, free short movies about Alaska issues. Really valuable as a planning tool. You need legal photo id to enter and will go through a metal detector. Wonderful rangers and staff eager to help. Decent book/gift store. All free - do not miss - what a great resource!
Watched a free movie on the earthquake. Interesting. They run many films, have literature, and some museum type info. Museums like this bore me to death, but my husband liked it. I found a couch to lay on, so I really should give it an extra star. Worth a visit if you want Alaska history.
Start there. You can get your maps and locations. They let you know of all the interesting places to visit.
We had a 10 hour lay over, so we decided to walk around the city of Anchorage. The population of Anchorage is age 40 and younger, or so it seemed to us. I found this information center to be laxed when it came to helping me. It seemed as if they wanted you to see what they wanted you to see, and the people working there didn’t seem to want to be there.
