Overall, it was a great experience with Fisherman's Choice Charters. Booking, the location, the fish, and the price was all great. There were four of us in our party and we caught 10 of our 12 fish limit of silvers. We lost quite a few and caught a few chums was well. We did the 5:30 AM trip and was glad that we did, because it seemed to slow down the later it got in the morning. Our two guides were Jerry and Kali. There were six of us in our boat plus the two guides. They took us up the Talkeetna river then parked the boat and split us into two groups. Kali was our guide and she was great. Very attentive to what we were doing. We would definitely go back. The main reason I gave it an average was Jerry. We had a 10 year old in our group and his language was terrible. I realize that Alaska is rough and untamed, but dropping F bombs every couple of words around kids and older ladies is uncalled for. Not to mention putting Kali down in front of everyone on multiple occasions. Not very professional.
Jerry and Kali were awesome, They brought us to the fish. You cannot make them bite though but we caught lots of salmon just not the good tasting ones though but it was still well worth the money. We had a blast.
We booked an early morning trip and had our limit by 7 a.m. Jerry and Cali were great guides. I'd definitely recommend Fishermans Choice.
We went on a half day trip on 6/18/14. Jason was a great guide. He worked hard to put us on the fish with the right tackle. Three out of the five on our boat landed kings from a middle of the road salmon run. Eagles everywhere....beautiful river (Deshka) ... an all around great day
we went back in 8/24/12 for a half day trip. Greg was our guide and told us the weather was a bit cold but we'll get what we can. He was very attentive the whole trip, when we did not catch anything at the first spot he moved us to another where we got bites while others in the area were not. While I only got one, my husband got two, and the other person with us got one, Greg never stopped trying the whole time we were out there fishing. I know it's hit or miss so we were disappointed that it wasn't a good day, but we still got to go with our 3 silver salmon. Then Greg told us if we have time there was a restaurant that would cook our fish for $10, we went (I have since forgotten the name of the restaurant) and they charged exactly what he said, plus they gave us salad, and sides. It was cooked perfectly and we enjoyed our meal thanks to Greg's suggestion...which is why they get 4 stars from us. We are going again this August, and I plan on booking with them again.
Hi.. we used Fisherman's choice this past summer. The guide was nice, but not very attentive and just not very good. It didn't help that we only had a few nibbles and Zero caught fish. The booking agent was very nice and well organized, but overall experience was not great.
I booked with Fisherman's choice after interviewing a couple places over the phone. I spoke to the owner and he gave me a reference to a lady who fishes with him every year. She sealed the deal when she told me she maxes out on fish every day for the week she fishes with him. I booked it and every interaction I had with the people who work in the office was great. We wanted to fish for sockeye salmon and booked a date that the owner said would be great for sockeye fishing. I know it's not an exact science...but when you say we'll catch sockeye salmon...I am expecting at least one person on our boat for the 2 sessions we did to catch a sockeye. We only caught pink and chum salmon which the guide told us were not good eating so we tossed them back. I was also slightly disappointed that our guide was not native to Alaska but from Wyoming. He did a pretty good job but I think a native would have had better knowledge. We did catch fish and we had a good time though so I am probably being picky. I give them 4 stars instead of 3 because they were so much cheaper than the other fishing companies.
I took a half-day salmon fishing trip from Talkeetna up to Clear Creek. My first cast landed a beautiful Rainbow Trout, which I should have kept. The rest of the morning was spent casting and reeling in. About 2 hours later, I hooked a good sized chum that jumped out of the water, and broke the line in doing so. There were 3 other charter groups at Clear Creek. It looked like everyone on the creek caught one - instead of several, so it might have just been "one of those days". Overall, I had a good time. The scenery was magnificent, our guide was helpful.
I have been fishing with Ray and Terri for years! The guides they employ are tolerant, well-educated in fishing in Alaska and focused on the client. They will help if you need it and offer guidance if you just need a bit of assistance getting back into fishing. I; myself fish for silvers annually with Fisherman's Choice and have NEVER had any issue. If any client feels that they have any issue, Terri and Ray are all over it! Guides are also tolerant and focused on making sure that everyone catches fish, even their shorter guests (kids)!Fishing in Alaska, as with most places (unless you are fishing in a barrel) is NEVER guaranteed, but Ray and Terri along with their guides are interested in giving their guests the best shot, equipment and advice for catching. Not all fish may be taken, since there are several species in Alaskan waters. Most are great to eat, but some, just are not "on the table" material. I have nothing negative to say about about my years of experience with Fisherman's Choice, so don't hesitate to contact them for your reservation while in Alaska!
Unfortunately, fish do get foul hooked while fishing. You can not determine how the hook will touch the fish. The guide spent a majority of the fishing trip trying to get your grandsons the chance at reeling in fish, which he did. Other people on the fishing trip also caught fish as you can see on our fishing report for that day. Smiles are worth a thousand words. I am sorry that your husband and grandchildren were not able to hook into their own fish and bring some home for you.
Fisherman's Choice Charter's is a no brainer. They are on the fish. Have good fishing equipment and an Award Winning Personality! We come up from Mn. every year to fish with Fisherman's Choice. Booked again for 2013! If you want fish call them.
