This is where you can see all the Alaskan animals close up. On a beautiful day it is a wonderful place to walk and watch the animals at play, but on a cold winter day, grab food in Girdwood and sit in your car, driving from exhibit to exhibit. See moose, bears, bison, elk, And more in a natural, open environment. Be there for the feeding of the Bears! Watching them play with their food is priceless. AWCC is awesome and more people need to find out about this attraction. Beautiful gift shop with items not found in Anchorage. I buy a season pass and take visitors year round or make it a day trip with grandkids. Don't miss this!
I enjoyed my trip here ANC being with a wildlife biologist was a bonus. It's interesting to me to see the comments about the reintroduction of the animals to the wild - yes, that's true, but they will be part of subsistence hunting and will not last long. Loved my visit though and hope Jade gets a new enclosure soon. She's gorgeous
From a great start with Paulie's welcome, to a great finish with Derick in the shop and further great follow thru with Erin the lead manager. Loved being the first one in on Sunday, and to receive the bonus gift of gummy organic worms, YUM!. Paulie said the early bird catches the worm. Love it! What a great place to view the rescued animals, well done all the way around the property. So excited for the Buffalo being released into the wilderness this month. Way to go team!
The Wild Life Center is a rehab center for native animals who are then reintroduced back to their habitat.. Great place to visit!
I love moose! Here you can get very close to a moose, as well as other wonderful animals like caribou, reindeer, black bears, brown bears, and bison, and still be safe. Even better, this is a rescue and rehab facility, so your money isn't going to the practice of kidnapping and imprisoning animals for entertainment, like many zoos and aquariums. You can enjoy the wonders of these amazing creatures knowin your money is going t help more just like them.
A fun day adventure after you have visited Portage Glacier. Lots of unusual wildlife to see. Beautiful view of the inlet as well.
We saw a lot of animals on our trip through Alaska, but I got the best pictures here. You can get so close to the animals. I have heard some people describe this as a zoo, but I don't think so. There is lots of land for the animals to roam and some of the animals have been rescued from people who could not take care of them. I think it is awesome that they are reintroduce the Wood bison to Alaska. I love animals and just thought this place was wonderful with a great program. The baby animals were cute too.
My husband and I visited the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Girdwood, Alaska in September. My husband is from Nigeria and I am an Alaska girl from Ketchikan. It doesn't matter where you are from...you will be impressed with these animals. We were there at feeding time for the Grizzly bears...Hugo, Patron and JB. Beautiful huge majestic animals. Seeing a 1200 lb grizzly bear just 20 feet away from you is life affirming. They have brown and black bears, bison, muskox, elk, cariboo, reindeer, moose, lynx and more. Be prepared with an umbrella because there is very little area that is protected from the elements and bring multiple cameras with batteries. We took over 800 photos in the 3 hours we were there. It is worth the drive to see all these amazing Alaska animals even for an Alaska girl like me.
Took the VIP Behind the Scenes Tour August 2014 with my father in law, husband and 2 sons 12 and 13. It was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed the tour. Not sure if it was really worth the $100 per person fee?You could tour all the areas yourself but not go inside the couple the tour allowed. We had a wonderful guide who gave us a LOT of information. She took us into the feeding center, into the musk ox enclosure and moose enclosure. We saw Snickers the porcupine whom she let us feed. We also saw Caribou, brown and black bears, magpies, and the mighty wood bison. The animals except for the eagle, lynx, fox and owl are not caged and have large areas to roam. The Wildlife Center has amazing Alaskan backdrops. The gift shop was also very nice and there was food and restrooms. I enjoyed spending time there seeing animals I wasn't able to see in the Alaskan wild. It definitely wasn't like a zoo and had a more natural feel. Amazing to see these types of animals up close!! Great place for photos!! Can be messy, dress accordingly.
This center houses most of the large animals of Alaska, from bears to buffalo, if you're looking to see Alaska's animals up close and personal, this is the place to be. This center also houses the Wood Buffalo, the largest of the North American mammals. They are building a herd here until they release them in Northern Central Alaska. As an added benefit, the location is beautiful; on a sunny day, one can see up to seven glaciers from the area. I would recommend this to any tourist staying in Anchorage, and any resident that hasn't been before.
Getting to see the local wildlife was a very enjoyable part of our trip to Alaska. The AWCC has a great selection of animals, and we have lots of fun memories and photos from our visit. Spending time with the animals definitely broadened our Alaska experience, as we learned about the local wildlife. My appreciation to the AWCC for their great kindness to my family.
Our wonderful host from The Bent Prop Inn took us out here and it was fantastic. Alaskan wildlife up close and personal...bears..moose..bison..eagles..lynx cat...great set up and one of the best gift shops i've seen in lots of travelling. Don't miss this one.
This is a great way to view many species of Alaska wildlife, in a controlled setting. The Conservation Center gives home to injured and abandoned animals. Easy to walk and see the animals in wide open spaces, in their natural habitat. Most of the animals would not have survived on their own. Some of the animals are eventually reintroduced into the wild. Brown and black bears, moose, elk, musk ox, caribou. etc. Inexpensive admission and nice gift shop, good bathrooms (real ones!) also.
We spent a full morning admiring and photographing the caribou, moose, red fox, eagles, and black bears! What a terrific way to enjoy Alaska's wildlife in a relaxing outdoor venue with a lovely gift shop as well. Very nice for young and old!!
Well laid out and compassionate conservation centre. We were there in winter and saw most of the animals. The moose were lovely and loved a nose pat!
