This short side trip off of Highway 157 between Cullman and Florence is absolutely worth your time if you have an hour. Fascinating displays, and you can even attempt to break his long jump record at an actual pit. Plan on going back when I have more time to view the movie.
Spent several hours at the great Jesse Owens Museum in northern Alabama. Easy to find -- easy to lose yourself in its displays and you must see the outstanding 45 minute film -- with original footage of ALL Jesse's Olympic race wins. Very interesting footage of Hitler -- why did he rock? See the Gold Medal replicas that Jesse had to sell shortly after his return to the US -- so he could feed his family. Look for the $10, 000 part of the film -- just great. Say hi to your wonderful Tour Guide Miss Ruth -- she's great.
On another one of our US roadtrips from Scotland and spotted this museum as we were staying in Huntsville (via Google Maps before we left the UK.). Jesse Owens has always been one of my heros and they have done a superb job of the museum not only showing his obvious Olympic achievements but his life in general. The location is almost an adventure in itself as it's slightly off the beaten track to anywhere but we were amazed at the size of the site and the main museum building which I'm sure most cities would be proud to have. Our lady guide was excellent and very friendly and I recommend this particular visit to anyone - well worth the trip.
We visited this park/museum on June 19th. There is plenty of parking. Although it is a little museum, the video is worth the trip. You will see and hear Jesse and learn about his personal experience at the Olympic Games. There is no admission.
This is a free attraction and my goodness, how great it is. We had heard of Jesse Owens but this covers his lfe from birth in a wooded hut (replica on the grounds) to winning four golds, his appalling treatment afterwards and his dedication to bettering the lives of many. We were stunned and the guide, a lovely lady was knowledgeable and helpful, playing the film just for us, the only visitors at that time. The museum is set in grounds which house picnic and play areas and if you re near, go, it is fantastic. The gift shop is reasonable and we happily left a donation, though there was no pressure to.
