Port Allen and West Baton Rouge Parish do not have the money to compete on the level of Baton Rouge museums. However, this is not a bad thing. This as well as other small town museums around Louisiana offer a very different look at the life people lived in years gone by. In many cases the items on display are actually more representative of what the more average person of the time had or used. In many cases the items on display were valued and cherished belongings or tools of hard working people and passed on in the family until no one wanted the older items any longer. They then made their way to the museum for the rest of us to enjoy. If you are traveling Louisiana make sure to stop at an information site and get all the information you can on museums along or short distances off the interstate. Visits to these museums will form longer lasting memories that visits to the big city museums.

We drove over to tour this museum and it was closed. The days and hours for this museum were posted on the front and it should have been open. We walked around the main building and couldn't find anyone around. We then walked around the outbuildings, which were very colorful, and took photos.
We enjoyed touring the museum and grounds for the special Christmas day open house. The Christmas treats of gingerbread and hot apple cider made it more special and we enjoyed a short play in one of the homes. Great for families!
Great museum of West Baton Rouge culture and history. Historic houses, furnished with period antiques and artifacts. Delightful working model of sugar cane refinery. Worth a visit.
