Made a visit during the Mothman Festival and spent 2 hours touring. We are visiting again next weekend and touring again.
I did not think I would enjoy this so I did not go. I could kick myself as my family went and they said I should have gone. We got there half an hour before close, the girl inside waved us in and she kept it open while the family looked. She did not rush them in any way. My family said it was so educational. Next year I will make it a point to go indeed.
This a wonderful small museum that focuses on the history of the Ohio river, that is literally less than 100 yards away. I will also include the River walk area with this museum and the artwork on the flood walls is incredible.
On one of my many trips to visit my aunt in Pt. Pleasant, I traveled to the River Museum. I was really impressed with the variety of exhibits and friendly staff. I learned things about that area that I never was aware of growing up just 2 hours upriver. The museum covers the meeting of the two rivers, what life on the river was like, the types of fish that inhabit that region and also covers the Silver Bridge tragedy.I feel that it is well worth the price and time it takes to cover the fine exhibits, and the staff is very knowledgeable.
Went at dusk , could have set in the swing and watched the river for hours . Nice memorial to the pioneer soldiers .
Fun little charming place to visit!!! we visited the Moth Man Museum, looked at awesome mural paintings at amphitheater. Very charming little restruant across street from muesum. Just like stepping back in time. You must get your photo taken with Moth Man statue in middle of town!! While at restruant make sure you talk to locals to get more info on Moth Man sightings!!!!! Local hotel is known for it's ghostly sightings!! We didn't find out, we were on the motorcycle and made sure we left way before dark!!!! A really neat town...must visit!!!
The Point Pleasant River Museum on Main Street is well worth the price of admission. It has a sophisticated river navigation simulator on which you can try out several different kinds of river craft. The people at the museum are very nice and knowledgeable. There is a large section covering the Silver Bridge disaster on the second floor. The video presentation is quite informative. Should you pass through Pt. Pleasant, do not miss this attraction.
This is one of the best places I've ever taken the family to. The kids could touch almost everything in the museum. It was also very informative. The lady behind the counter was extremely nice. I'm ready to go back.
Looked like it had a lot of model tugboats inside and the building had part of a pilot house on the roof of the building. From what we could see from looking in the windows it was not worth a paid admission.
We went to Point Pleasant for the Mothman Museum and decided to go to this one as well -really glad we did! It was very interesting and informative (more so than the Mothman, actually). Historically relevant, with impressive artifacts -and also area fish (gar, buffalo) in a large tank!Everyone was very helpful and polite, and it is a hands-on museum so great for kids (and kid-like adults...).
The River Museum was really interesting and fun. They have a simulator that makes you feel like you are traveling up the river and you can choose your boat. Don't forget to walk around the state park and see the murals and statues while you are there. The Mothman Museum and the Harris Steakhouse are nearby too.
This quaint town offers a wonderful history lesson without the boring teachers to tell it....Part of this adventure was to learn everything we could about this town.
Was pleasant as well as informative, enjoyed the beautiful models. Appreciated that the name of the model maker was included with the information placques. Good film. Wish I had slotted more time to browse the museum.
Like people who live in NY I was guilty of not paying attention to what was in my own town. Did not go to this little museum until had been open a couple years. If you like history and especially river history there is much to see in a relatively small building. Mr. Fowler and his staff have done a wonderful job with exhibits. I probably liked it more than some because I have lived in the area for many years and knew some of the people shown in the pictures and exhibits. I would strongly urge anyone with a love of history to make this a stop if in the area and as a bonus there is a small state park just across the street at the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers that also has an original log cabin full of period exhibits.
History of the River and the B ridge that fell was excellent...it is a must stop and see place along with flood wall paintings about the history of the area was wonderful, educational, and inspiring.
