As if you could top this!...... woodland streams, two waterfalls, a beautiful gorge, forests carpeted with ferns and mosses..... want more?...... how about rhododendron thickets, old fields, a rustic pioneer farmhouse, rural peacefulness, and to top that.... a small museum. All of the above can be had among the varied offerings in this splendid 3775-acre park. We took the Falls trail, which is truly lovely, leaving our vehicles a short distance from Cabin Creek Falls. About 20 ft high, the falls tumble down overhanging ledges to a green pool rimmed by rhododendrons. our path continues along marsh Fork Stream through a lightly wooded valley which then follows a climbing course above Black Fork Stream to Black Fork Falls which flings water more spectacularly than the first falls. the trail is a bout 3.5 km long and unfortunately is not a loop so we had to backtrack... but who cares when you are surrounded by such beauty.
While we were only able to spend a couple of hours hiking along the the "yellow" trail loop to the Marsh Fork and Black Fork Falls. We really enjoyed the lush beauty of the mountain laurel along the way. We happened upon a pair of large white-tail deer along the trail and also had a pileated woodpecker land in a tree near us. (Unfortunately our camera was not at the ready for either.) The trail is clearly marked, leading between the two falls. (There is a spur trail - not marked - that follows the Marsh Fork for a ways, but that is not the actual trail)The trail is generally and easy walk, however only the first hundred yards or so to the loop is paved. The remainder of the trail is a mix of rocky surfaces and grassy/gravel paths. The falls may be viewed from the marked trail, however access to either falls (and rapids along the way) require some more rocky climbs down, and back out. Not difficult, but watch for slippery surfaces, especially when wet. The falls are definitely worth the effort.Since we were only there for a short time, we did not get to take advantage of the beautiful facilities that are available, including an indoor pool, restaurant, and golf course. On a future trip, we plan to spend a couple of days there.
It is on our bucket list to stay at all of the West Virginia State Parks at least once. This one did not disappoint us. We stayed 3 nights in one of the cottages. It was clean and very comfortable. Consistent with all the state park cottages we have stay in so far. But, we were surprised to find no literature in the cabin that gives info on the park, local attractions, or to entice you to use the restaurant. All of the WV State Parks we have stayed in so far have had this, but not really a big deal that it wasn't there. Much to our surprise, this was the weekend of the 32nd Annual Lumberjackin Bluegrassin Jamboree. It was a lot of fun to watch the competition between WVU and Penn State. Even if it did rain all weekend. We did not get to experience a lot this park has to offer because of the rain, but there is a lot to do here. Golfing, indoor pool and spa, fitness center, hiking, picnic areas with shelters, playgrounds, a Pioneer Farm, camping, just to mention a few. There is also the option of a very nice lodge to stay in. Everyone that works at this park is very friendly. We had breakfast at the lodge and the food and service was very good. Our server was very efficient and friendly. I would love to give her kudos, but I do not remember her name, but she had just came back to work after having her 3rd child, a son.The only thing that would be an issue, is there is no cell service. It is out in the middle of nowhere. : )However, much to our delight, the cabins did have free WiFI. Oh, and wow, the foliage is beautiful here in October!
We have been having our family reunion at the park for several years and really enjoy having it there. The park grounds are beautiful and the shelters are close to the bathrooms. The bathrooms are the greatest, but are much better than one of the other parks near Beckley where we used to hold our reunions.Note: It is free to get into the park. There is a rental charge to use the shelters.
We have been having our reunions at Twin Falls for the last 26 years. We still have a great time here, even though our numbers are getting smaller. This is a beautiful State Park, and is well maintained, however some things are a little expensive, such as staying at the Lodge is pricey for this area, as well as renting the shelters have gotten more expensive over the years. Still, it is one of the most beautiful parks in the US, and is worth a visit if you are ever in southern WV.
Quick note: we didn't stay, we just played. We are part of the VIPP program and Twin Falls was on our "need" list. So, we decided to make a weekend of looping around to the other "needed" parks. This was our first stop and we decided to check out the observation tower - what an awesome sight! You can see mountains for miles - literally! The weather was perfect (clear, no humidity) and I would recommend a quick stop for this breathtaking view. Afterwards, we did head to the Lodge for our stamp and quick shopping trip in their gift store. Beautiful layout, entrance, and seemed cozy. But....we were off to our next stop.
The park is absolutely beautiful but those nasty restrooms that are at the picnic area are horrible...I'm sure that the park can afford to put doors on the stalls and soap at the sinks and send someone out to clean them everyday...other than the restroom I was 100% satisfied
Lodge is nice and recently renovated. Others have commented on things to do here--the place is out in the middle of nowhere. Room was nice, but the bathroom was tiny. Thank goodness for the restaurant--it is pricey--but there are no other alternatives for miles around and it was good. We hiked to Twin Falls--just a warning--be in good shape and able to traverse lots of uneven ground (it is not accessible for anyone who has difficulty walking). We wished we had more time to hike the miles of trails in the park. There is an 18 hole golf course. The Pioneer Farm was a big disappointment--the signs there read, "do not enter farm, view from parking lot." That was it.Wished the lodge was closer to an Interstate or US Highway.
This is my second night. I have a nice room with a balcony overlooking the woods, I brought most of my food from home but had an excellent breakfast in the restaurant. Lots of deer, great hiking, and clean room with lots of amenities.
Twin Falls lodge is much better than those at most state parks. The new wing where we stayed was clean, roomy, and up-to-date including microwave and mini-fridge. Ask for a room with the balcony overlooking the woods not the roof of the old wing. The restaurants' food is good but a little overpriced. Very few visitors staying there when we stayed ( June, 2013 ) , and the restaurant was mostly deserted at both breakfast and dinner. The signature trail to the two waterfalls was somewhat littered when we hiked it, and had numerous mud-holes even though it had not recently rained (could be a fine trail however with some upkeep ). Not much to do in the park other than golf which must be its main emphasis. Apparently nothing to do in the surrounding area, but if you venture out beware of speed traps, like the notorious one at Lester, WVA, in route to Beckley. Overall, its not worth the out-of-the-way location.
It was one of the best place I have stay in a long time. I have been there 2 times this year and I would go back in the summer. Food great and the rooms was wonderful. The pool great and the falls great to go see.
My boyfriend and I recently stayed a night at the lodge at Twin Falls. We were extremely pleased by just how nice everything was. The lobby was very warm and welcoming, and the room was quite nice and comfortable. We had breakfast at the restaurant down the hall and found the prices to be more than reasonable and the portions were bigger than expected.I look forward to staying at Twin Falls in the future.
New lodge is the place to stay. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of room. We had WV trout for dinner which was excellent. Service at the restaurant was OK but needs improvement. Had to wait until meal was almost finished before receiving wine which we had ordered at the start. Also, room was too cold and after several requests to have the A/C turned down we were forced to return to our room to get a sweater. Had a very nice hike around the pioneer cabin area.
Our family picnics here from time to time and the area is very well maintained. There is nice lodging that was recently renovated and a nice golf course.
This park has a new lodge which looks very nice. Unfortunately, we stayed in a cabin, which was small and dark and not too great. The food at this lodge was very good however, and the golf course was nice but desperately needed mowing when we were there. The outdoor pool provided no towels for lodge guests but was quite refreshing. This lodge is not near anywhere at all - Pineville is the closest town but is not really close and doesn't have much to offer. Swimming, golfing, tennis, hiking, an excellent nature center and some daily activities are what you find if you go (but don't stay in a cabin!).
