The museum was closed when we were there, but we walked the length of the flood wall with a story of the history of Matewan area carved into the cement wall and done very well glad the museum was closed.
This place is beautiful and full of old information! ! The area is rich in history and old world culture !! Lots of history from the railroad to the coal wars to the Hatfield and Mccoy fued
Matewan Depot and Museum is very educational. They have maintained their heritage and it is very informative about what happened in this region in the late 1800. The museum is.open daily with a guide that can explain this history. You can purchase items to remember your visit.
It is an exact replica of the old depot. The people are very friendly (as is everyone in Matewan). We were only able to spend a few hours there but I am sure that you could spend an entire day and not get bored. The admission is a very affordable "free". You cannot go wrong here.
We spent one day in Matewan,West Virginia which is known for it's ATV trail heads. Our host at the B&B suggested we visit the old depot and museum just up the street a ways. Not much else to do in this small town so we went not expecting too much. We were surprised to find a very educational and well maintained museum. This is coal and train country so there was a lot of information and pictures on that subject. Also, this is Hatfield and McCoy territory. Had a wealth of information on the feud! The kind gentleman at the museum put in some video's for us to watch on the history of this area. It was all excellent and would recommend to anyone.
