About 45 minutes into being horribly lost after being forced off of our route because of a road closure, we were shocked to suddenly drive right by this gorgeous waterfall tucked away just off the road. It was a "did you see that?!" moment. We quickly backed up, and despite the drizzle coming down, we parked in the small parking area and got out to take a look, along with maybe a dozen other people. The whole spot is just stunning. The waterfall, which is surrounded by high rock walls, is very tall, with water pooling at the bottom and then flowing off into New River through large and small rocks, which we made our way through and over to get right up to the falls. If you're anywhere in the area, it's definitely worth taking the time to see this. It almost made getting lost for an hour and a half worth it (almost!).
A tall, yet un-spectacular falls, it is worth the stop. There is a small parking area along the side of the road for you to pull off. Nice falls to get some pictures of, as you can get very close to them. We seen lights positioned to shine on the falls at dark, which would be very nice, if in fact they do work.
These falls are outside Ansted and Hawks Nest and are worth the trip. The falls are located at the bottom of the road, just before a turn and are directly off the road. They are definitely worth the stop, the falls are located in a semi circular rock formation resembling a cathedral, hence the name. The falls are relatively tall, have several drops on the way down and you can walk up to the falls easily and directly. A great place to picnic and take some photos.
We almost passed right by and missed these beautiful falls. Pull off and put your feet in the cold, clear water! Great photo ops, too! Just before you get to Gauley Bridge.
This was my third visit and each time, butterflies everywhere! Easy to locate and walk to, considering. Even better each time, nothing has changed. Nice place to stop for pictures, but I always wish I would bring myself something to do to extend the visit. Next time I will picnic.
First off, dont let the directions trick you,..yes, the main road down there from Hawks Nest Park is as thin and windy as they come but no, you dont have to go up any steep terrible eat your car roads...the falls are easily seen from the road, have a nice pull off parking lot, and a covered picnic table...a sign warns you to lock your doors...there is a foot bridge to access the other side, You can walk right up to these falls, these 80ft, magnificent falls are the best advertised secret.
