Get up to see the sunrise on the mountains! They glow red. Beautiful. and eat at the Many Glacier Hotel for breakfast and watch the sunset at night!
The boat dock was our destination for the Chief Two Guns trip across Swiftcurrent Lake, a steep 400-yard walk to the Morning Eagle and a cruise across Lake Josephine. We were again impressed by the knowledge of the crew. I know it is a script all these kids memorized, but the memorized it well. The pictures tell the story better than I could, but I will add an anecdote. She Who Must Be Obeyed is still recovering from some very nasty heel surgery, and her mobility is impaired by her walking cast. The woman at the car rental told her she would never make the hike over the hill between Swiftcurrent and Josephine. We agreed we would try it and only go as far as we could. We were the last one of the group to make it, but we made it. The two rides were very pleasant and very much enjoyed.the pictures can be found herehttp://glacier2014esa.blogspot.com/2014/11/day-5-august-9th-many-glacier-many_15.html
We took a boat trip from Many Glaciers and headed out to Grinnell Lake on a ranger led tour. The trip took us across Swiftcurrent, hiking to Josephine Lake, and then to Grinnell. We went with a ranger and she had some great information. I would not hesitate to do this independently, however. The trail is well marked and not strenuous. On our way back by boat across Lake Josephine, we were privileged to see a black bear swimming across the lake!
We took the Glacier Park Boat tour of Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine. Very enjoyable and lots of beautiful scenery. The narration was very good and very informative. We did get to see a mother brown bear with her cub while on this lake. The walk between the lakes was some what steep but not as difficult as advertised.
We had a room with a view of Swiftcurrent Lake - gorgeous pink reflection at sunrise. We took the boat ride on the last day - for this trip you cross Swift Current Lake, take a short hike than ride again across Lake Josephine. If you get off to take the hike to a falls, expect a long wait to get back on a boat as all rides are full of tourists.
I saw a moose, a baby moose, a brown bear, and then another brown bear while just wildlife watching from a distance near this lake. That all happened in less than an hour. Also, just the mountains and lake itself are pretty spectacular if you have time to sit and admire the view.
This is a beautiful lake surrounded by magnificent mountains. Of course the most outstanding feature of the lake is Many Glacier Hotel with a full service restaurant.
There is a trail around the whole lake which takes about an hour and is an easy very scenic walk. It is cool in the forest and the views from each part are beautiful.
We were tired but wanted to get out of the car for a short hike, so we selected the Swiftcurrent Lake Trail. It was perfect. Although it had rained, there were very few soggy spots along the trail. Best of all, we had our one and only moose sighting of our two-week trip on this trail. See photo below! He was a big one, and he posed quietly for a long time. The worst part of the hike was finding a parking spot, way up on the hill behind the Lodge, and then hiking back up that hill when we were finished with the hike.
Due to some health problems since resolved I had to limit my hiking this year but I was able to thoroughly enjoy the view from the east end of Swiftcurrent Lake. The weather was perfect for photography and the lake was glassy smooth. There are several good vantage points for photography. The old Swiftcurrent Chalet is now a small shop where pre-packaged food items and drinks can be purchased. There is also a small souvenir shop. Clean restrooms are also on the property and the Glacier Park Boat Co. is a very short walk to the lake's edge. Even if you are not very mobile you can enjoy the beauty and serenity of the area.
A very easy walk, not one of the best in the area, but fits those who do not like to go up and down. Very flat. We did part of it in a rainy day and it was not worth it. The lake looked gloomy and not attractive.
We liked the east side of the park better. The scenery seemed a bit more dramatic and we saw more wildlife here (moose, a grizzly, mountain goats).
Definitely recommend the hike around the lake. It is only 2.5 miles and you can go further by connecting it with other trails. The scenery is spectacular.
The boat captain had great information about the area. We loved the boat ride, saw a moose on our portage and enjoyed the suspension bridge and side trip to Hidden Falls.
It's an easy flat hike starting right at the Many Glacier Hotel. When you get to the sign "Josephine Lake", follow it. It's not far and not hard at all. The boat company says it's strenuous but that' very misleading.
