Typical historic homes and gardens, perfect for family day out or wedding venue. Loved the gardens...out building interesting.
I read about this historic site in the DAR magazine, American Spirit. I was quite captivated by the article and the figures of George Rogers Clark (Revolutionary War hero), his sister Lucy Clark Croghan and her husband William, and of course, William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. It motivated us to go to Louisville/Lexington for about 10 days. We happened to hit the weekend of their Harvest Festival (I think that was the name) which was perfect. In addition to the home, which was open for tours, there were re-enactors in a Colonial encampment, British encampment and a variety of colonial vendors. Everyone was in character. Tours of the home were available, led by docents. Lucy and William had many well-known figures stop at their home. There were different drills, storytelling, music, food, etc. There is also a Visitor's Center with a good museum and gift shop. It was so interesting. I think we paid an entrance fee for parking. It was a very good afternoon and if you like history, I would visit. There is a lot to do in this area of Kentucky.
Guide made the story of Clark family come alive. This stuff is not in history books. George Clark was an amazing Renaissance Man for his time. It is worth finding out more about America's heritage by visiting these local homes. It opens more sites for history buffs. Inspires to go on and research history, i.e. I found out my first state governor was from KY after this visit. My city is named after him!
We caught the last tour of the house. Interesting history, lots to see, our guide was less than knowledgeable on the house and its history.
Visited this historical spot summer 2013... i was at a loss for words..my one disappointment was I did not enter the main house as the tour was overpriced..I did make use of the tour of the museum and the beautiful grounds..I was able to buy some wonderful informative books at their book sale at VERY reasonable prices..I will visit again next year when I go back for vacation.
Get a great lesson in local and American history at Locust Grove, the home of some of George Rogers Clark's family members. It's a living history lesson. Also many special events are held here, like a Jane Austen festival, reenactments, and antique fairs.
Great historical home and museum. The annual 18th century market fair including American and British encampments. It gave us an opportunity to get a glimpse into what life was like in the late 1800's and talk to the re-enactors who were extremely knowledgeable about the time period. The market area consisted of blacksmiths, potters, milliners, furniture makers, bakers, etc.
Such a nice place to visit. Love the Jane Austin fest in summer. Even little kids seem to like it. It nice to learn a little history about our end of the planet and have it be positive for a change.
Locust Grove is the home place of Lucy and William Croghan, the sister and brother-in-law of George Rogers Clark and William Clark. It is a fascinating home to visit and the museum is wonderful as well. They have informative and entertaining special events and lectures as well as Revolutionary War encampments. I highly recommend this site.
This house is amazingly well-maintained. Just a delight to tour and see all the historic articles. The Jane Austen festival in July is an AWESOME event. The grounds are well maintained and access is well-organized. Worth your time and money if you love history.
the living historians were as good as I have ever seen. Locust Grove in autumn is so beautiful! The house is as important to American History as any other, as it was in this house that the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery began and ended. I highly recommend this stop while in Louisville, and be sure to stroll the grounds as well.
We enjoyed our time here led by a docent with only us in the group. The house is very interesting and the docent had lots of stories to entertain us. A little too much emphasis on it being a living house museum to accentuate the unmade beds, used tablecloths, etc., but on the whole a worthwhile stop.
What a great way to spend a fall day then walking around the grounds of a Georgian mansion (c.1790)served as the last home of General George Rogers Clark, and features crafted furniture, portraits, prints, textiles, domestic objects, and many events.I particularly enjoy the 18th c. style entertainment, purchasing replicas of 18th century military and household items, and enjoy food and drink as our founders did, meeting and conversing with early Americans. Mock battles for our country’s independence feature General George Rogers Clark’s own militia, the Illinois regiment, as well as British Dragoons and Marines, and German Hessians. Native Americans are always present as well. Its a good time.
Just to add to my previous review, I went here this weekend for the antique fair and I really and truly had a wonderful time! Parking was very smooth, good picnic food, and wonderful vendors set in one of the most beautiful venues ever!
Locust Grove was beautiful. The interior of the house has been well restored. Our guide was very informative and related interesting facts about the family and the history of that time period. The grounds are well-maintained and lovely to walk through. The museum is very informative and nicely arranged.
