I love going to the theater and buy season tickets each year. You never know what you will see, but it will always be innovative and interesting!
Nothing quite feels like the holiday season like A Christmas Carol. In a darkened space, surrounded by theatre goers, literally hanging on every brilliant word and each dramatic gesture, the mood is of pure exhilaration. So yes, the time for rejoicing can begin, because Actors Theatre will be running Charles Dickens' beloved tale through December 23. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in attending a performance of this masterpiece should purchase their tickets in advance. It is sure to be a sell-out!A Christmas Carol is a wonderful, soul-stirring peek into the heart of Christmas and its biggest "Scrooge" who, with a little help from his friends in the spirit world, realizes the error of his ways before permanently impacting several lives. This is a performance piece almost completely built upon human emotions, which means that the casting must be nearly perfect to even attempt to convey the messages sewn into this intricately woven plot. Directed by Drew Fracher, this is precisely where the Actors Theatre truly excels.Ebenezer Scrooge, played by William McNulty for his 13th consecutive season, is beyond brilliant. Moving with continuous flow of each characteristic that he exudes onstage... passing easily from menacing to heroic to even comedic, the crowd seems to embrace every aspect of his role. The performance is compelling and exciting, with the Ghost of Christmas Past arriving in a whirl of aerial acrobatics, the Ghost of Christmas Present providing an infectious spread of laughter, and the Ghost of Christmas Past completely filling the stage. This year's set is especially enriching, with the employment of projections, designed by Philip Allgeier, to to accentuate various scenes throughout the production,And the narration by John Preston is nothing short of entrancing. It is evident that the audience becomes completely bewitched when he speaks, focusing on each word, emotionally and visually preparing for the next scene. Also, don't exit too quickly! Children may even pose for a photo with Santa and cast members!Be prepared to start of the holiday season at the Actors Theatre, and begin a wonderful Christmas tradition!
went to see Love's labour's lost. I was only in town for one day i decided to head here to end the night. Other than one actress that was in it who pulled my attention with her acting skills, the rest of the cast could be discarded. There did not seem to be any heart put into the work. Thankfully there is a bar attached so during the intermission I was able to get a drink to make it through the second half. be sure to research the cast before seeing a show here. The actual studio was pretty decent, the seating was a bit tight.
If you like an old theatre maintained as it was decades ago, you will love Actors. Alumni of Actors have frequently gone on to Broadway and various positions of authority in the arts. Don't miss Christmas Carol in season. A good restaurant and bar are attached.
I have been here numerous times and each experience has been wonderful. Love the atmosphere and the productions are superb.
Its the only show I have seen here years ago, but would go again in a minute! Company was fantastic and a great performance!
If you decide to attend a theatrical preformance in part based upon the reputation of the company in charge you can rest assured that presentations by Actors Theater will meet or exceed any reasonable expectations. The theaters themselves are intimate and comfortable. The preformers are talented and well schooled. The programs offer a wide variety of the art form and something that should appeal to most theater goers each season.
I recently attended an performance of a new play as part of The Humana Festival. Excellent casting and acting, all elements came together to make the production a memorable experience. Came to the performance last minute without tickets after looking on line and seeing seats were available, bought them at the window and didn't have to pay any handling charges. Overall, a great time.
Not a place for adults with good taste. Productions are silly & juvenile. You would think a city of this size would have legitimate theater. Regrettable.
I just completed a weekend of New Plays at Actors' Theatre. Six plays in three days! It is the Humana Festival of New American Plays. The productions are well done. Nice facilities. The ticket prices are very reasonable. The patrons who attend these new plays purposely travel to see them. This makes for an extremely involved and passionate environment.
The plays have all become MTV shows with loud music and people yelling rather than acting. Everything is forced instead of true acting. I am giving up my subscription after 38 years.
This is worth going to when they have the special shows in town. Otherwise it is average. The area needs more high quality shows on a more permanent basis.
We've had a season subscription for five years now, but will probably not renew. It seemed most of the shows were really good at first, but in the last two years we have not enjoyed a number of the performances and in one case left at the intermission-- something we never do. It had nothing to do with politics or language or religious issues; it was just that we found some of the shows either boring or inane. We will not abandon Actor's, but we will buy tickets for individual performances that truly appeal to us. The shows are always highly professional.
Saw SIster Act there and it was fantastic. I had never been to Actors Theatre of Louisville before and I will definitely go back. The only thing was the seats were a little bit snug.
Actors has suffered declining quality over the past two decades. But, the last performance I saw there, "Pirates of Penzance" performed by the Chicago troupe The Hypocrites, shows Actor's is climbing back. This beach bum/garage band interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic is just the satire on a satire that it's authors would applaud. You can google the Courier Journal's review of the operetta for more details. Will be in Louisville a few more weeks. Go if you can.
