This is a great little Theatre with some really wonderful plays. I have been a couple of times and try to go as often as I can. I took my Mom for Mothers Day and we laughed so hard it hurt. This is a real gem of a place for a wonderful night out that won't break you on the price. Every seat is a good seat, plenty of parking, and just lots of fun.
The talent is always top notch. The plays cover a wide range from comedic, to tragic, to provocative, mysterious, and scary. While I liked some better than others, I enjoyed every one of them.Where in the world can you get a wonderful evening for such a fair price?
the actors here are all local and they put on plays that could compete with broadway actors at a mere fraction of the price. highly reccommended
My husband and I have been season ticketholder of the Public Theatre for years. We have enjoyed every play put on by this professional theatre and always look forward to their next performance.
Having seen almost every production since it's inaugural many years ago I can attest to the professionalism and attention to detail that goes into every production.Having been a Broadway theater goer in the past I have been able to compare many of the NYC productions with those put on by the Public Theater. In many cases the local productions have outshown their Broadway counterparts. The artistic direction has also lent itself to variations on the "classic" productions. A recent play that comes to mind is Red-about the life of the contemporary painter Mark Rothko. As an outstanding a professional production as I ever scene.[pun intended] A Majority of the Actors are Actors Equity members and many of them are recognizeable by their extensive biographies and TV/Movie appeareances.A must see
I have been to several shows at the Public Theatre and have enjoyed every one of them. Most performances have between 1 and 4 actors on average but that never seems to make the play unbelievable.
Every show I have ever seen here has been great. Very professional theatre for such a small town. Very reasonable prices.
This theater is intimate and comfortable. The plays are relevant and the productions are professional. I think this is my favorite theater. I feel the name says it all. Come one, come all. The bathrooms are clean and the wait is short at intermission (this is an important fact for some of us .) The cookies are good and a bargain. Come to the theater and enjoy the word smithing of playwrights brought to life by very good actors.
Let me lead off by saying that I grew up in New York and have a theatre going history of seeing a high quality product. The Public Theatre is a professional theatre company (Equity union) that rivals and sometimes surpasses any theatre you will see in NYC with the added benefit of a top ticket price of only $18 (rumors of going to $20 next season). They only present plays, not musicals (but you can go to Maine State Music Theatre in the summer if that's your interest). If you love theatre, this is the one to go to.
The cast of the play Hound of the Baskervilles was magnificent!! I would definitely go back again and see another play.
Dedicated local theatre group. Consistently excellent productions; the annual Christmas productions feature a play followed by live entertainment including Christmas carol sing-a-longs. Really festive and fun.
