We walked along the carriage road near Eagle Lake with our Jack Russell Terrier in early March. Many of the carriage trails are "groomed" for cross country skiers, and the snow is well packed so that you can walk on the snow without sinking into it. There were several feet of snow on the ground and we were fine wearing waterproof boots. You need to stay out of the tracks made by the cross country skiers, however. We saw huts on Eagle Lake and the carriage trails were very quiet and peaceful (except for the laughter of children in the huts). We only spent about an hour on the path near Eagle Lake but we plan to return next year, probably with snow shoes, to explore a good bit of the trail system during the quiet winter season.

We found a nice safe parking lot and unloaded our bikes for a relaxing ride along the sure pack carriage roads. We found the roads to be mildly steep and wide enough to pass or be passed safely. Hiking trails intersect the roads and you can change to a hike if you chose. The carriage roads are lined with carved granite blocks and granite walls. You have to put this on your bucket list!!!

Great easy hiking - good for almost any skill level, and you can always weave your way to Jordon's Pond to grab a bite.

We visited Acacia national park and spent a day cycling through the park on the carriage roads. The roads are well kept and smooth to ride. There are many long steep gradual hills that seem to go on forever but the upside is you know what goes up must come down! There are not many places to stop with picnic tables or bench seats and the signage is poor until you understand the numbering corresponds to the map given out at the tourist information centre! You need to be prepared for diverse weather. We started off in glorious sunshine but it was quite cold around the lakes. A fantastic 1/2day riding for the moderately fit. There are more intensive rides around the park we only experienced the moderate and easy tracks....did I mention the scenery was stunning in the fall? A must do if you are in the area.

The carriage roads were designed by John D Rockefeller and other conservationists. They wanted to protect the park and keep its' natural beauty. Today there are 45 miles of these rustic trails and 17 stone bridges that span roads and waterfalls. The carriage roads are of dirt and yes, you can go for a carriage ride or you can ride your bike or walk...No cars are allowed on these trails. It is a very peaceful area and a way to get a respite from the crowds that are in the park.

We loved the trial. Our big knock is that there are no mileage indications on the signs. So if you are riding and you decide you may want to see "Bubble Rock" (as we did) you don't know if it is half a mile away or 10 miles away because all you have is an arrow indicating direction. This is really unusual and... well... wrong. The trail itself was fine.

We really enjoyed the well maintained trails on our bikes, a few more hills than I expected but still easy riding. Lovely views and to be among the autumn colurs. We saw very few people walking or cycling so felt very privelidged to enjoy the quiet and peace. Be sure to get your bearings before you start as map, confused us a little and we found ourselves on a path restricted to walkers and carriages so had to backtrack up a hill! Lots of parking and good to get there early in the day before it gets too warm.

The carriage roads are well traveled by auto, busses, hiking and biking. They are well maintained and an important part of the history of Arcadia National Park.

We didn't see anyone on our hour long walk on one of the carriage roads. Well marked and easy walking with a few small hills. Very quiet and peaceful with a few deer and other critters along the way.

The Carriage Roads are unique to Acadia, they are a series of trails through the park that are closed to cars, and great for biking/ running /walking. Horses are also allowed on the roads.Make sure you have a good map of the roads, it is also helpful to understand the elevation changes, some get steep for a while and can be a good workout (or you can give up and walk your bike up the hill - no shame). In the fall the leaves are beautiful and even during a holiday weekend, there is plenty of solitude and places to stop and enjoy a snack or picnic (bring in your own).Keep in mind that in some places fill up quickly so you may need to park on the side of the road.Other than the fall, it probably is great here in early summer early in the morning.

These trails / pedestrian roads are great to bike, walk, or run on in Acadia. Starting by Hull's Cove and running towards Eagle Lake was a great set of scenery from Witch Hole Pond to Eagle Lake. Well maintained, no cars, and gorgeous! Best of all, it's away from all the tourists on Cadillac Mountain.Best national park I have ever been to. Driving around Loop Road is also very scenic.

Fall is the season to be here at Acadia. The colors are so vibrant and magical.. Loved the carriage road.. There are numerous spots for photography. Don't forget to enjoy nature !! You can see some of my images from Acadia at http://nationalparksimages.blogspot.com/2014/10/acad.html

These roads are a fantastic way to get out in nature without the risk of uneven surfaces and possible ankle twisting. You can look all round as you walk and not fear tripping. The stone bridges are fantastic and make sure you hike underneath them for a total picture. Take a map as there are many intersections. I'll go back as I get older as they were so level.

We spent a day riding the carriage roads, having gotten trail recommendations from the staff the Jordan Pond House in the morning. If you plan to ride from Jordan Pond, and want to eat lunch there, arrive early in the morning to both get a parking place and make a lunch reservation. We went north, along Jordan Pond to Eagle Pond, the Aunt Betty Trail and then around the mountain to the Amphitheater and back to the Jordan Pond House. The ride took about 3.5 hours and was both great exercise and the scenery was wonderful. Early October in the Park is when we will always come, as the temperatures are cool for biking and the foliage is nearing peak. After lunch we drove north and took an easier ride to Witch's Hole, which is not as dramatic as the rides further south.
