This is a great museum and most things are free there. Great location and neat exhibits. I recomend visiting it and the neighborhood where it is located.
Excellent venue to learn about local history through displays, photographs and lectures. A few fee is asked and then takea step back in time.
This Society has been around for a long time, they have history going back to the 1600 on Schenectady and the surrounding area. They also have birth/death/marriage records for many area churches.have fun going thru all that great history!
As a history buff, I'm always looking for museums. Small museums, or community-oriented musems, are my specialty. Schenectady History Museum, located in the heart of the Stockade area, was not a disappointment. We were on our own to tour the museum. Plenty of information is provided with each exhibit. We missed the weekend when many of the homes -- some dating back to the town's early days cica 1700 -- were open to the public. I took this tour about 20 years ago and was sorry to have missed it on this trip to my hometown. The Stockade is also home to a statue of Lawrence, the town's Native American. Next trip I will stop by to give my regards to Lawrence.
Small interesting local museum- make sure you go here before walking around the stockade district as they can give you a map with access to a narrated tour.
The museum staff recently worked with my organization to coordinate a walking tour of Schenectady prior to our conference. The museum's director (Brian) put together a wonderfully informative afternoon split between this museum and a walk around the historic district. He (and the museum staff) were professional and very knowledgeable. Our group gave the event high marks across the board. The exhibits at the museum are fascinating and unique.
