As the Dave Clark 5 would say "anyway you want it" Coles woods has it! Easy glide or challenging traverse down the Wall, it's here, it's groomed and it's free. Just when you think it can't get better, you discover lighted night skiing. The best things In life are free.
cole's woods is a treasure for glens falls. In the summer it is great to ride a bike, run, or just take a stroll. It the winter it is very charming for skiing and snow shoeing(although the skiers get a little annoyed about the snowshoes:( making marks on the tracks. It is overall a beautiful place to go. i have always felt safe in those woods and think you are good to run solo if you have to. i realized after about 5 runs that you routinely see the same people using the trails. i
Cole's Woods is the place to be if you want to get in a run or walk or hike or bike, but don't want to travel far to do it. Nestled conveniently between Glens Falls and Queensbury, to the south of Aviation Mall, many parking options are available. You can park in the Y parking lot, the parking spot on Fire Rd, or at the back part of the mall and easily access the trails. The outside loop measures out to be close to two miles, a perfect combination of flat trails and some moderate, but easy, inclines. The people you run across are friendly and if dog walkers are following the rules, the dogs you come across are a nice treat. When you are done and think about the time you spent in Cole's Woods, you'll feel as if you drove miles to the "woods" of the Adirondacks, when really, you can come out and walk over to the mall for an Auntie Anne's to reward yourself.
This is a very well lighted and groomed cross country skiing trail open to the public for free. When it has just snowed the trails are usually excellent. After the snow season, Cole's Woods is just a half way pleasant place to walk a dog. That's about all I can say.
Seven kilometers of nicely groomed trails in Glen's Fall/Queensbury NY which starts behind the Glens Falls YMCA. This is a free ski area and since pets are not permitted on the ski trails, it is not despoiled by canines, as are other free ski trails such as those at golf courses. It is a relatively short distance off the highway, but portions of the trails go along the highway, so you can hear the traffic. There are also snow shoe trails which go through the woods. The nice part about it is if you are a "Y" member, you can shower at the "Y" after you are done and use the stream room and sauna.
