Its a long drive, but the views heading up hwy 14 to Walden are breathtaking. Lots of wildlife along the way. we saw bobcat, moose, dear, elk. People in Walden were very friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions for travelers.
Pretty drive huge meadows lots of seasonal wildlife, A relaxing drive followed by lunch or dinner at the river rock
We loved everything about this place even though it is way off the beaten path. Very different scenery from other parts of Colorado. The folks who worked at the welcome center were very helpful.
If you are a birder or just interested in a beautiful natural setting where you have the chance of seeing wildlife, the drive through the refuge is worth the time. Spring and fall are the best in terms of seeing a variety of wildlife. Besides many species of ducks we saw pronghorn and a herd of about 100 elk.
Stopped for several hours at Arapaho NWR and found friendly staff. Several hundred Elk meandering about the local area. Beautiful region of Colorado with mountains in distance, wild animals all around. High plains scenery is special. Nice visitor center. This refuge is complex with several others north into Wyoming. We also visited Hutton Lake north of here and had close ups of Antelope along the road.
Great place to watch waterfowl and the occasional Moose. Coyotes, Foxes, Golden and Bald Eagles can also be seen here as well as Antelope too. Fantastic views all around. Deserted, no one goes there, at least very few. You can just about have it to yourself. You can park and walk for miles.
