Going there after several cold spells the expectation for the Gardens was not very high. It was a nice place to walk around, but much of the greenery was, well, brown. They do have a nice heated building for the orchids, they were beautiful. The Gallery is nice. I would say average for a city of that size. They had quite a few works by notable artists. The staff and security were extremely friendly. I would recommend it to anyone in the Memphis area. The place is not too large, so in a few hours you can see it all.
Lovely gardens and museum. Especially beautiful in the spring. A Treasure of Memphis, so be sure to include it on your visit to Memphis!
Nice stroll through the gardens and gallery. Also a nice museum store. Great place. I would go again.
This is such a treasure of Memphis. If you're seeking a quiet retreat, whether it's inside or out, this is a lovely destination. I think my favorite time to visit is in the spring when everything is blooming. The tulips can be breathtaking. The house has different galleries. They have travelling exhibits that come in, and some permanent exhibits. I try to go at least once a year. The gardens aren't extensive, but they are lovely. They offer a variety of programming, so be sure to check the web site for concerts, plays, child free events and more.If you like art and gardens, this is a must see, whether you are a local or a visitor. There is a free time. Check the web site to see if it's still 10-12 on Saturdays.
The gardens were hands down the most beautiful I've seen in this lifetime. The grounds are wonderfully kept- admission is very fair. Each season brings a different blend of colors and smells. Absolutely a must see if botanics are your thing.
We were looking for something to do on a recent rainy afternoon and this place came highly recommended. The grounds are beautiful and I can imagine them being extraordinary in the warmer months when all of the flowers are in full bloom. The amaryllis exhibit was lovely and is definitely worth a look. The indoor programming was well done too with the grave, thick Rodin sculptures perfectly balanced out with the lighter weight art & objects from the permanent collection. The only misses were the local artist's stuff and the so-so gift shop but otherwise it's a nice way to spend some free time. Definitely take a minute to check out the little video about the history of the place. It's fun to imagine the lives of people who once lived in such a grand yet genteel southern style. That gentility lives on here.
Dixon museum impressed me by the uniqueness of the collections. December presented us with the largest Rodin collection we ever expected to see in a single location. The museum nicely arranged the 51 statues across several rooms. A small version of 'the thinker ' and the enormous 'the three shades' among ohers can be appreciated until jan 11. Also, we were very impressed by the large collection of fine german porcelain and pewter utensils on display. Unfortunately the collection of impressionist paintings was not on display. A reason to go back... The museum shop is worth a visit. Innumerous items from local and foreign artists at very good prices . Because of the cold weather we did not visit the gardens- another reason to go back. We took a pick at the conservatory currently displaying a colorful selection of amaryllis. Tue is 'pay what you wish'
This is one place I was always proud to show off to visitors when I lived in Memphis. Mostly impressionist paintings inside and glorious grounds and gardens outside.
This is an old family estate house that has had an addition in order to be able to exhibit art objects and hold various functions. The house itself is not massive and the addition flows perfectly to parts of the house's first floor with its original furniture and decoration, part of an era of fine living as you can see by the custom wallpaper and other furnishings. The Dixon has permanent art exhibits with fine porcelain and paintings as well as special art exhibits on loans throughout the year. Part of the charm of this place are the gardens around the house. There are sometimes music presentations held outside in spring and summer. The best time to visit would be in nice weather since you really do need to include walking outside when you go.
This museum with a full range of the plastic arts representing many eras is set in an old Memphis mansion surrounded by gardens. Especially beautiful in early spring, but attractive in every season. Special exhibits year round, and a surprisingly good small collection of old masters as well as modern artists.
Def worth a trip, great art museum and grounds, always something new to see. Always some great traveling shows. The grounds show lots of new things to do in the garden.
This is a gem of an art museum. The gardens add to the overall beauty, as does the home that the museum is housed in. If you love art, spend a couple hours at the Dixon!
It was cold and dreary when we visited, but it was still interesting. I probably would have enjoyed it more without the rain and dreary skies. It would not be the top on my list to see in Memphis, but would rate a visit after you have seen what you came to see in Memphis.
I used to walk the gardens and dream of one day having my art on exhibit in this Museum because it is beautiful and among Memphis' most savored treasures.
The Dixon has 17 acres of gorgeous gardens and a unique art collection with renowned artists such as Monet, Degas and Chagall.Saturday mornings are Free!
