I did the 3 hour tour but wished we could have went for the day. Great guide! Dirt Bike Goggles would be good to wear.
This was my first time on an ATV, so I was a little nervous. I went with my niece and we both ended up having such a great experience. Justin was really thorough explaining the process of gear shifting to us, and patient with me when I forgot how to stop at the first stop sign! (Yes, I did!) But I got the hang of it after that. No mishaps, no fear, just fun riding and breathtaking vistas and exciting trails in the back country. We paused to watch the sunset while Justin talked about the history and geology of the area. It was both educational and fun. We had gorgeous weather, which turned cool as the sun set. Lovely evening all around. Worth every penny. We'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Five of us went on the 6 hours tour. Our guide, Justin, was friendly, kind, fun and knowledgeable. He was very patient and flexible, teaching us how to drive the ATV, showing us the sights and views. The sceneries were amazing and spectacular. Justin brought us on a short hike into the slot canyon. It is a truly beautiful place, so surreal and inspiring. Lunch was delicious Turkey sandwich and chips. Tons of water for all of us thirsty people. Towards the end, we encountered a herd of cows blocking our way, so we had to encourage them to move on. A big brown Cow gave me an evil glare as I passed it. Was such a fun experience for us city folks. Would highly recommend this. Such great memories. :-D
We did the 3 hour tour but easily wished we could have went for the day. We had to change the days at the last minute and even had 1 person in our group cancel. When we showed up Justin was great about charging us the right amount and even changed the fee from 1 rider to 1 passenger when my mom decided to just ride with Justin in the polaris. He knew a lot about the area, the foliage, the animals and was a wealth of info. I totally appreciated his honesty and candor. The views were spectacular and the riding loads of fun. Every one on our trip had a fantastic time and agreed next visit we would do the entire day. The great thing is Justin will give you want you want on your tour...if you want to go nuts on the ATV he will take you to the perfect trail. You want to see beautiful views he will take you there. He was a great guide, but after about 15 minutes it was like being our there with a buddy who there to help you have a great time. Which we did...including my 70+ mother. Note, I had a backpack with water and supplies as I was worried about being in the boonies. The ATVs had racks and bags so you could strap your pack or a cooler and bring a lot more if desired.
We were expecting a full day trip to remote locations, only accessible by foot or ATV's. What we got was 6 hours of nose clogging dust, traveling on roads the whole time. I could easily have driven my Subaru Outback on the same trip. Justin is a pleasant guy who talks a lot (too much) and seems to be proud that his family and other locals break the law and destroy government property relating to federal protection of this unique environment. If the law restricts motorized travel off road, we should have been informed of this and we should have been made clear that we would be traveling on roads the whole time. I specifically asked that we travel on "slick rock" terrain and was assured that we would. Sorry but this just seemed like bait and switch to the tune of $175 each!
Our day started out a little scary because it rained the night before and we were afraid we were going mudding instead of riding. It was a chilly morning and I wore 4 layers and ended up in my T-shirt. The dust was down and the ride was GREAT! We went for the all day trip. We were a little disappointed that Justin was late and we had to gas up and then buy our drinks. And of course there is paperwork. So we didn't start riding for about an hour after we thought we would. After 5 minutes of entering the Monument and listening to Justin's heritage my crabbiness went away we were having the TIME OF OUR LIVES! Justin was extremely intelligent and filled us in on all the local history of the locations we stopped at. (sometimes a little too wordy) but I wish I could have taped his stories. Safety first was his motto. He never left his bike without his water and attachments. I felt totally safe and got my money's worth. The food was really good. I would recommend his company to all. He adjusts the speed of the ride and your locations based on what you can do. Lucky for me (I was the slow one) he always made sure I was okay. But I was the one that wanted to go faster. We hiked to Slot Canyon and have unbelievable pictures and memories. I hope to someday go back and do a little more riding! Thanks "Joey" for the exhilarating day.
I had signed up for the ATV tour online and didn't realize it was 7miles out of Bryce. We stayed at Rubys where they did their own ATV tours. When we arrived in Tropic, Justin had us follow him to his house--I was concerned--didn't know what I had signed us up for. Turned out we had a blast!! Justin was awesome. He truly loves what he does and you can tell by how much time and attention he gave us. We went to places that only the locals know about. He is 4th or 5th generation in the neighborhood and knew his history. If you want a experience that's non commercial, I'd defin reccomend him. The only downside is that you don't go into Bryce, he takes you into the Grand Staircase. On another note, there's plenty to do in Bryce (the hiking and horseback riding are great alternative ways to see the park.
My husband and I did a 3-hour ATV trip with Justin in October and it was exhilarating! We were total newbies to 4-wheeling, and so Justin spent the first 15 minutes explaining exactly how the machines worked and then we were off on our adventure. First - quick ride down the road to an old cemetery where Justin filled us in on the pioneers who settled Tropic. Then we were off again and got to experience guiding the ATV through a narrow but deep ditch in the middle of the trail. We stopped at an old coal mine and hiked around the area while Justin told us the history of the mine. Another new experience was riding up a fairly steep trail - and riding back down after exploring the top of the mesa and looking over the valley back towards Tropic. The 3-hour ride was over too quickly and we are planning to go back next year for an all-day ride.
Grand Stair case ATV Tours, Hwy 63 Tropic, UTOctober 14, 2008Reviewer: Lyn from the Bay Area, California, USAIt started as a very cold day, 45 degrees; I was wearing two jackets! We were a group of four at all riding levels. From novice to experienced. We choose the all day ride and we rode all day!Justin gave us a through training on how to operate the ATVs, and what they were built to do. So we felt confident we could pick it up with confidence and at our own pace. He also encouraged us to ride as hard as we wanted, even in 5th gear for the experienced rider! He put us in a line up and we maintained the sequence throughout the day by our choice. He took us to interesting points of interest. Some of which are pictured on his website and unaccessible without permission to pass. We rode over 60 miles that day.Justin is 4th generation of a local family and egger to share his knowledge of the area and we heard some cool vintage stories of the past. We saw a truck that went over a narrow bridge in the 50s? and is still there today. Its actually at the base of the over crossing. It was truly an amazing experience. Some of us left considering the 3 day tour in the future. Justin truly enjoys what he does and wants you to enjoy your experience too!P.S. Something to consider bringing with you: GogglesHe provides a 3/4 helmet, so your face is exposed.Reason for not providing goggles because they are not cared for correctly by the borrower. I'm glad I packed mine!
