While planning our Canyon National Parks three week road trip I was looking for a town for our first night's stay and read about the oldest brick building in the state of Utah being in Fillmore. I knew immediately that were stopping here. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. It was definitely worth the stop. The two log cabins and the old school house in the park are also worth a look, as is the 1926 log American Legion Hall. In addition there is a wonderful war memorial on the north side of the county courthouse building. You will also want to have lunch at Cluff's Car Hop Cafe before you head down the freeway.
This self-guided tour of the territorial legislative building in Fillmore is terrific. They give you a 5 minute overall intro to the history of the capital, the building, etc. and then you can tour the rooms in the basement level yourself. Some are filled with old photographs of settlers, some are devoted to a specific aspect of life during the 1850's. Created in the 1920's by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, they have an amazing number of beautiful old photographs on display. The main floor has more rooms filled with displays, and the top floor is a big open room where the legislature met. If you like history this is a must stop in a quiet little town.
We stopped here on our way out of town. It was full of history. The employees were very friendly and the facility was well kept.
