Great little town with so many little shops and fun places to visit. They have some unique places right there on main street so stop and look around. It's a cozy town and worth the stop. A couple book stores, enough food experiences to tempt you, crafty places and antique/thrift shops, just to mention a few. I found Paper Moon and fell in love. That store is so unique with lots of fun things to purchase: books, cards, antiques, socks, holiday items, journals, soaps, aprons, etc. with three floors, you're sure to find something to make you smile. I found some gifts, some things i am sure will please the receiver, something that never would have asked for. They carry things for little ones to adults. Make sure you check them out.
Downtown McGregor is a fantastic place to visit. They have so many little businesses in town. It is a very down to earth place to visit. People are so nice. There is a casino just less than a mile down the road.
If you like the quaint upper-midwest river town atmosphere then this might be the spot for you. Most of the circa late 1800's buildings have been rehabbed, probably to better-than-new condition, and are now occupied by modern, tourist-oriented shops and restaurants. I was there on a pleasant mid-August Thursday and found a few visitors, family groups and seniors, walking around. Street and lot parking was plentiful, convenient and free. I have no idea about crowding at peak times but I suspect that the more remote location compared to Galena, IL may moderate it. This can be bad for business and people-watching but great for convenience and comfort.
There is a lot to see and do in McGregor! The only problem we had is that a lot of places are closed on Monday and Tuesdays so just be aware of that when you are planning your trip. It is not a negative item, it is just so people will be aware of this when planning. We stayed at the Holdiay Shores Motel so we were able to wander the town frequently. The shops do close early so we would go to the local Kwik Star gas station and store. The people are so friendly and helpful and the food is delicious! They even have fresh fruit! The favorites for this family were the F'Real machine which makes ice coffee, smoothies and milkshakes...delicious! There is also a fancy coffee machine that makes specialty coffee and iced coffees..another favorite! We frequented this place daily and the staff remembered us and welcomed us each day!!! Great place and the prices were surprisingly reasonable for staples you might need! Try the cinnamon rolls!!!
Great Downtown in Small town Latino Mexcian food is great nice street Bars. Nice walking from End To End
This a great little town to spend the afternoon in. Places to eat, store fronts of all kinds. River rides, Pike's Peak, gambling boat nearby, antique shops, and the list goes on! I've always enjoyed this little river town. It's neatly kept, filled with friendly folks, and a great place to enjoy history. If you stop here, plan to spend a few hours; it's really hard to do this lovely town justice with just a "fly through".
If you like small town atmosphere, this is the place for you. Just walking down the street into the shops was a breath of fresh air for this city girl. Loved it!
