Sun Set Beach, South New Jersey is good place to spend a day, or several days. The Beach includes, three shops, snack bar, Miniature Golf, and the USS Atlantus (a mostly sunken- concrete ship used during World War I. The ship sunk off the coast of New Jersey: June, 8th 1926, during a storm. The Atlantus, the second cement prototype navy ship, was one of 38 cement ships. The ship was decommissioned after only one year, and was to be used as part of a ferry service, from New Jersey to Maryland. Several attempts to free the Atlantus failed. When you come to Sunset Beach, bring you camera; for the Sun Rise, Sun Set, Atlantus, Dolphins, some Whales, and "Historic Buildings"; up and down the shore..Sun Set Beach, is around 5 miles south of GSP (Garden State Parkway), first entrance. The beach is filled with silky sand, and cape may diamonds , quartz crystals, found all over the beach. Trip was with Mother, and Sister, no young children, no category belowThe facilities could have been cleaner, they have been in the past. The store on the West side of parking lot, seemed fishy smelling. They could have used air freshers of some sort.... This is why my rating over all is between three and four circles.
This is a nice beach( but don't plan on swimming). I'm sure it's more spectacular at Sunset. We searched the beach for stones called Cape May Diamonds which are almost translucent and stopped in at the gift shop that is close to the waterfront. We also took some photos of the bow of the SS Atlantus which was one of the experimental concrete ships built during WWI. It is a nice location for some interesting photos - even if you happen to visit in the middle of the day....
This is one of the most romantic places to visit on the Jersey Shore. On clear days the sunsets are magical, you can lose yourself in them. It's nice to go early and see the sights or grab some ice cream. There is a very nice gift shop to spend some time in and check out all the neat items they have. While this is not a good swimming beach its fun to look for shells stones and the famous cape may diamonds. Very often you will see lots of dolphins swimming right off shore. One other thing not to miss is the nightly flag ceremony they have. Every evening they honor a deceased Veteran by flying there casket flag all day and then have the family there for a patriotic flag folding and song presentation, truly inspiring.
This has been a favorite spot for our family through the years. We are very patriotic and during the season, veterans have a flag lowering ceremony around 8:00 pm. The flags usually have flown over a base somewhere in the world so there is a meaning behind the ceremony. There is a snack place with great burgers and an Awesome gift shop. On the way you can also stop at the World War II bunker where they watched for Germans in the Delaware Bay. You can even park at Sunset Beach(free) and walk to the tower.
This is the most beautiful sunset outside of Hawaii. Arrive a couple hours before sunset or you will face the sunset rush. Head north up the beach a little way, not too far or you will hit Higbees Beach which is clothing optional. Bring a blanket and enjoy the view and hunt for the Cape May Diamonds. They are everywhere you dig or look in all sizes and shades. There's a little grill and ice cream store and 2 gift shops. We went several times the week we were there to see the sunset. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day they have a flag ceremony every evening at sunset.
Sunset Beach is a "must" every time I'm in the Wildwood/Cape May area. The sunsets are amazing and prior to my first visit, it had never occurred to me that it was possible to see an ocean sunset on the East Coast! The daily flag-lowering ceremony is very special and brings a tear to my eye every time. See http://sunsetbeachnj.com/Flag-Ceremony for more info on the ceremonies. My 10-year-old enjoys the mini-golf course there and I enjoy the gift shops, which carry a wide variety of merchandise at very good prices. There's so much packed into this little tip of land, that it's really worth going the extra mile or two outside of the usual Cape May shopping area to check it out. Added bonus: Free Parking!! (which is virtually non-existent in the rest of the Cape May tourist areas.)
As the name suggests, the Sunset Beach offers spectacular views of the sunset.Pros:1. Close proximity to Cape May beach and lighthouse.2. Make sure to reach well ahead of sunset time to grab good spot to view the fun.3. Highly recommend cycling down to avoid waiting for long parking queue.Cons:1. Parking is only available along Sunset Blvd, so can get tight to park and exit.
We have been going to Cape May for 23 years and have gone to Sunset Beach for the same length of time. The sunsets over the water are spectacular! Unless it's really bad weather or very cloudy, you're more than likely going to see your best sunset ever. The sunsets are frequently glowing red and the colors that illuminate into the rest of the sky are the most amazing pastels. No matter how many times I see the sunset from here, I'm amazed at it's beauty. The Flag Ceremony (held Memorial day through September) is lovely and very moving as every flag flown is a casket flag. Before each evening's ceremony, they give a brief history of the life of the person whose flag was flown that day. It's hard to watch the sunset at the same time as you're participating in the flag ceremony but the flag is usually down well before the sun has completely set. Traffic leaving Sunset Beach can be heavy right after Sunset. There is shopping and a miniature golf course there as well as the Cape May Grill which offers food all day. The prices here are usually much lower than the prices in Cape May. They have great prices on clothing. They have plenty of souvenirs and Cape May related books as well as jewelry. What's left of the Concrete Ship is viewable from Sunset Beach. People search for Cape May diamonds on the beach.Parking during sunset can be very difficult and, if you don't get there early enough, you'll end up parking along the street and walking down to the beach. Parking is free. The beach is rocky instead of sandy. It is free. No swimming is allowed but dogs are!!
This beach is not only beautiful for the sunset but they have a beautiful Flag Ceremony every night starting Memorial Day and I believe it ends on Labor Day. The use Flags from Military People that have passed from all of the wars. They Fly the burial flags and invite the family to refold the flag in a beautiful ceremony. I have been really touched by this being my Dad was in WWII and my husband in Vietnam. It is very touching for everyone. The family that owns this little slice of heaven does a Great thing by doing this every night and there is no charge for parking or for the beach ceremony, they do it for Love of Country and people . Everything else everyone else states about the Cape May diamonds and the beach the sunken ship are all true as well. But it you ever get a chance try and go at sunset and see how they lower the Flag as the Sunsets...BEAUTIFUL!!!
