This is McAllen's attempt at an entertainment district, but the bars generally found here are uninspired and devoid of any kind of outside the box thinking, mostly just a bunch of crowded places to get expensive gin and tonics.
Just a couple of good places found among the street. There are many that have closed down and others that are for other type of clientele. If you are in town I guess you can check it out.
My two 20+ year old daughters like to go there at night for the entertainment and to hang out with friends. Not as much though as when they were teenagers. Or adults 40+, not recommended.
There are many nice places like El Patio, where you will have fun, drink, dance and have fun with your friends.
This used to be skid row in McAllen but with the downtown renovations that taken place over recent years it is an interesting party scene for those who like to embibe.
There is some good bars and clubs, some even have live band playing. Bars are small but you can find what you like there. Cheap place to get loaded with beer and shot. Better nightclub with good selection of drinks and good bartender, with different price. These can't be compared with "big city" places but... they are decent at their own scale. The Flying Walrus, Thirsty Monkey, Frida’s Grill and Cantina, OMG Bar.
downtown mcallen has a lot of bars and places to dance with your love one. There is security around and plenty of parking lots. I will recomend TRI-BAR for young people, they play top hits and ladies go crazy
Agree that this once decent (but very small) entertainment district is not what it used to be. The bars, once rather charming, are now either rundown or sparsely populated and seem to be just hanging on - with the resulting poor drinks and service if such places. It seems that this grand experiment has failed. It was a nice attempt by the city, but poorly run bars AND restaurants have doomed it. Poor parking, safety concerns, and lack of maintenance and cleanliness are the primary culprits in my opinion.
I remember coming when this place first started out and go out with friends when i'd visit on the weekends down from Kingsville. Ever since then, the type of people that flood the area on the weekends have made it less desirable. recent shootings have also changed up the type of people who go.
An elegant LITTLE restaurant tucked into the 17th Street Arts District. See the artwork of Rubio....a great Mexican artist. Enjoy the special foods on the menu.
The area has a few blocks of nice restaurants and bars/clubs. If your visiting then this should be a stop just to have a few drinks and some fun.
