Had a good time visiting the zoo.. driving up from Midland tx (2-1/2 hrs away) with our 6 yr old. Fun place for the kids, with a decent variety of animals and a neatly maintained zoo facility.
The Abilene Zoo is great. Small enough to see everything in a couple of hours and Big enough to not be boring. Lots of habitats and interesting exhibits.
I live in Abilene and have a family pass to the zoo. Every time we go there, we see something uniquely different from the last time. Sometimes certain animals are simply inactive. Hey, what else they got to do? Other times they are quite active and entertaining. I'm personally not a fan of animals trapped in cages but the Abilene Zoo has some decent areas for these animals and they look to be in good health. Gone are the days I grew up in when animals are kept in 8ft by 8ft steel cages with concrete floors, exposed to the elements and living in their own urine and feces. I think back to how cruel their living conditions once were. While not all the animals at the Abilene Zoo have large living spaces (I'm thinking of the ocelots), but they are constantly growing and making improvements. Being a small zoo, it doesn't take long to tour the entire place but it is a nice place to get in some exercise, spend time with family and check out the animals, fish, birds and reptiles. I sometimes wish there were other eating options inside and near the zoo but for the size of the place, what they have serves them well.
The Abilene Zoo is one of the best zoo's in Texas. As a resident of Abilene, we take pride in the way the employees take care of the facilities. They deserve a great "pat on the back"!!If you haven't visited the Abilene Zoo you need too!!
We went early to avoid afternoon heat, so we were some of the first to go through the gates. We enjoyed the train ride and my granddaughter squealed in delight as she fed the giraffes. The flamingo habitat smelled but all other displays were well labeled and clean. A really nice zoo for its space. The park nearby offers a sprinkling fountain bathing area for children which is a great way to cool off afterwards.
This was my 2nd trip to the zoo. It was a bitterly cold day. There was a lot of construction work going on (as was the case on my first trip about 8 months ago). The main attraction was not out - the giraffes were having their enclosure changed so they were not out - last visit they were the highlight.
Every year we allow our kids to choose a fun place (anywhere in within the state of Texas) and we always seem to end up here-less than a hundred miles from home. We love this little zoo!
We haven't been to this zoo in a couple of years. They have made some nice changes. The exhibit additions really make this zoo more interesting. Although, we did miss the giraffes because the exhibit was closed for construction.
This is a really great zoo for a small town like Abilene. It's easy to navigate, the animal enclosures are very accessible, and the variety of animals is really outstanding. I especially love the giraffe enclosure, where my grandson can hold out giraffe kibble and they will eat it right out of his hand. The little train that circles the zoo is a nice ride and not expensive. Their giftshop is really good - lots of variety and the prices are reasonable. We visit this zoo whenever I'm in town, and my daughter and grandson go even more often than that - they're season pass holders.
Small and intimate, great family fun with park, splash pad, and fishing all next door. Have been going since we moved to Abilene in early 80's, our daughter loved going now our grandson does.
The Abilene zoo is worth your time and money. The admission price is very reasonable which is helpful to all. The animals are well cared for and the habitats were clean. I generally avoid the reptile house in zoos, but went into the one at the Abilene Zoo and saw lots of movement from the snakes. The trip was lots of fun for our granddaughter.
For a small zoo, they host a wide range of animals. It's also easy to navigate and a pleasant walk around. The train around the zoo is great for kids too. The reptile house was one of the best I've ever visited. The snakes were really active and not just lying there as I've seen in other zoos. It was also reasonably priced and hosted a wide variety of local animals as well, which was very interesting. It's amazing that this is a privately owned zoo and a real asset to Abilene. It's also good to note that there's a great playground just outside the zoo and during the summer months there's a water play area as well. Enjoy!
Visited the zoo on the fourth of July as part of the celebration. It was everything I had hoped it would be. I especially liked seeing the giraffes and hippopotamus. The work crews were very friendly and helpful. ..I plan to go back again when the weather gets warmer.
I went to the zoo in Abilene, Texas in October with a friend. I really enjoyed my visit there, to say the least! The weather was perfect, thankfully. The zoo there is very clean and all of the animal cages were as well. I hope to go back soon and visit once again!
Saturday was Halloween celebration and thousands were there. Zoo exhibits were very interesting. Lots of colorful birds,
