I went on this drive with my grandparents. A beautiful way to see the hill country and definitely one worth doing. We even got to see some wildlife.
Just got a spring like day in Central Texas and had to go see what this Devil's Backbone Scenic Drive is. Well it is a drive through some beautiful and hilly country. The road is interesting and fun and it is neat how far you can see. The best vantage point is a picnic area off the side of the road on a hill top closer to San Marcos and just before the 12/32 split if heading towards New Braunfels to the East or just after the 12/32 spilt if heading West on 32. And as other reviewers have written the picnic/scenic view are can be missed...not to much signage until you are right up on the area.
Read the books of Bert Wall and they will fill you in on the tales surrounding the Backbone. Take a little side trip of the road onto Serendipity La, than onto Ghost Dancer. You might come across a spirit or two. Or bring a shovel and go down into the valley where the Spaniards hid their treasures.
It is a beautiful view, but we were expecting more signage for the rest and picnic area. Given that it is touted as a "don't miss" for the area, we thought it would be clear where the scenic viewpoint is. It is marked only as "picnic area", but it is worth stopping for the view.
Very nice drive over some twisty roads with great views of the wineries and scenic hill country views...add in towns like Wimberly, Driftwood, and Blanco where you can see and enjoy the small town charm and it's a great recipe for a good day in the hill country. Great convertible weather yesterday and light traffic on a Monday AND it's a great alternative route to Austin from San Antonio. Sure beats the freeway or other roads under construction. You won't make good time, but then that's not the point is it.
Nice drive, not so "devilish" as we expected but lovely. Lots of views of the towns, hills, and valleys. Smooth road.
One of the highlights of our stay in Wimberley was the side trip to the Devil's Backbone. This is a terrific drive starting just south of Wimberley and heading north to Blanco. Just wish I hadn't been driving. The views are truly magnificent, and you won't get a better look at Texas Hill Country.I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see the real Hill Country. If you need to stop, there is one picnic area you can pull into, but the view from this location is at best average compared to the rest of the drive. If you want to eat in Blanco, try the RedBird Cafe on the square. Food was very good and the portions are big!
Most backbones are straight and this should have been our first clue. After riding the Pigtrail in Arkansas, Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee, The Twisted Sisters in the Hill Country, etc.... you get my drift if you ride, this was just a stretch of road. There are a couple of scenic views. As motorcycle enthusiasts, I guess we expected twists and curves. Wimberley is a cute little town.
Don't expect some death defying switchback-or the best scenery in Texas (Try Big Bend NP for that!). However I'm glad we went out of our way to drive this route as the rolling green hills and valleys were well worth the visit. Initially we drove straight past the Devil's Backbone Tavern and had to 180 to get back there. We are so pleased we did. We were welcomed with open arms by four locals who took us under their wings and showed us around the place. The place is out of a time warp and reminds me of the Johnny Bush song "lost Highway Saloon". They have the best jukebox I have ever come across, but I suppose it's down to personal choice. Don't miss this wonderful place.
It sounds sinister to navigate, but the Devil's Backbone really isn't that bad, provided you keep your eyes (and wheels) on the road! This beautiful stretch of Texas is quite surprising given the flat landscape we see so often in most parts of Texas. Be prepared to stop frequently to really enjoy (especially if you are driving). It's definitely worth going out of your way to see this uncommon site.
Recommend the view from Devil's Backbone overlook park and epic views along FM 32 heading towards Purgatory Road. If you get a chance also ride down FM 150 to Dripping Springs and River Road down South Access Road by Canyon Lake.
It was so nice to see hills and valleys actually exist in this part of Texas. The sad part was the tour guide told us that it was a popular place for "jumpers" and there were many crosses and memorials at the lookout point. A small fence was erected to discourage this activity. I would like to take the drive again a little later in the fall.
Beautiful views and fun road. Be sure to stay on your side of the road. Watch out for motorcycles and bicyclists!
We took route 32 east from Blanco to Wimberly and it was boring and an out of the way drive. We were heading to Wimberley from Round Rock Texas and decided to take the long way so we could take the scenic drive. This can't be the best scenic drive that Texas has to offer as it is pretty lame and lacks shock and awe.
Drive out to take the Devil's Backbone Scenic drive, you wont be disappointed! The vistas are exceptional and the beauty of the hill country will calm your wondering soul!
