Wanted some live music when we were visiting San Marcos a couple of weeks ago. Someone recommended this place to us and we tried it out. Not bad as far as live music goes in San Marcos. The staff was fun and fairly attentive, good prices.
Great place for live music, however, there is not a whole lot of seating. Bands usually come from out of town. Would like to see more local bands play.
I've been to TMT a couple times to see Henry and the Invisibles, and I also attended the Matisyahu Acoustic show. I have danced on the bottom floor and have also explored the upstairs and I must say: the acoustics,no matter where you are in the building, are fantastic. Kudos to the owners and investors that saved this old theater and converted it into a music hall. The layout and design of the place is smartly done, and I'm loving the location of the 3 bars (2 downstairs and 1 upstairs). You get great views, in my opion, where ever you stand and even if you can't see, you can still hear the music perfectly! If there is downside, the only one I can think of might be the drink prices being a little high for my puny college budget (perhaps not for individual drinks but it definitely adds up, especially when I'm having a great time), but being that I don't go every day of the week, it's worth the splurge for when a good band comes to town! Plus, it's still cheaper than a lot of other music venues elsewhere. My suggestion for visitors is to buy tickets in advanced and get your tickets in your hand as soon as you can! If I remember correctly the Matisyahu show started at 9 and people were already lining up to get their tickets around 6pm, so that should give you an idea of what to expect for a big show. Come super early to find a decent place to park (PLEASE carpool if in a group, parking is really sparse on the square), enjoy some dinner and happy hour specials on the square, play some pool, and then enjoy your show!
We saw matisyahu open his first prefromance for his new tour in San Marcos Texas! The sound quality and the feel of the venue takes you back in time. It's located on the San Marcos squre where the vibe is active but not like 6th street. Go to San Marcos for a show away from home! They have killer bands for half the cost and a better experience.
We've had occasion to se a couple of shows here in the past. The experience was very good. But our experience for the Bob Snider / Shinyrib show was fantastic. This venue has great sight lines and lot's of unobstructed views even for the general admission tickets, There were lots of stools and even a fair number of tables. The sound and lighting was first class all the way around. Being in San Marcos the crowds are not crazy, so one could get close to the stage and stand, or hang out further back. Bartenders were attentive and friendly. Drink prices reasonable, including some beer specials. They are booking some top tier acts that would pull in a thousand or so in Austin. Here in San Marcos, you can see them with a few hundred, up close and personal, and still be in a nice venue.
