We stopped for the morning in Marshall and had the best time! By chance we found this lovely home and feel so thankful we did! We got there first thing in the morning and were lucky enough to get a customized private tour. Our guide was outstandingly knowledgable and really brought the lives of this family to life! :) It was a great time. Totally worth the 4$ and hour of your time!

We stopped by the Starr home and enjoyed the tour by a knowledgeable guide. The story of the family was explained clearly. I would recommend any visitor to Marshall take some to explore the home and its furnishings. Previous reviews seem to reference a time when the site was under the control of Texas Parks and Wildlife. There isn't a reference to "park" in the name at present. There is no B&B, either. Just clarifying from previous reviews.

This is a state historic SITE, not a park, although the grounds are pretty and park-like. [It's easy to get confused on that; there are lots of historic SITES in Texas so always best to make sure if you are really looking for a full-blown PARK]. For only $4 we got a pleasant tour of this home which unlike many places contains furnishings that belonged to the family rather than just items from the appropriate time period. If you're interested in early Texas history or just seeing a pretty, restored old house, you can't beat the price and location. There are so many things to do in the area [Caddo Lake, Jefferson and the Riverboat tour], that this is a great brief stop in a full day. We were in a hurry that day and only had time for a 30-minute visit, but it could be a nice hour or two to enjoy it at a leisurely pace. Photography not allowed inside the house...limits review possibilities!

It's not a park! I don't understand why they call it that. It's an antique house filled with antique items that you can walk through for a lesson in history, and one families story. It's a nice time, but the name is quite misleading.

I first read about the B&B located at the Starr Mansion in my Texas State Parks book. It sounded intriguing and a little out of the ordinary, so I figured why not. I really didn't have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. We stayed one weekend in Feb '02 (one of those freakishly warm weekends in Texas). Guests stay in the former servant's quarters (which is actually former-former part of the original Starr mansion). It is located in its own small building on the acreage of the park, and comes complete with one large room, bathroom and small eating area (w/ refrigerator and microwave)...very romantic. And on the weekends, save the daytime visitors to the mansion, you more or less have the entire park/mansion grounds to yourself! The park ranger who runs the place is extremely friendly too, and the rates (about $85/night) really can't be beat for what you're getting. It is also conveniently located about 15 minutes away from Caddo Lake, should the urge to go canoeing/hiking strike you.All in all, I would highly recommend staying here.
