Drove from the shops on the hill down to the small winding road to lake Travis. With my family and kids in the car, stopped at the first lake entrance we found. Long story short, we left when the guy told us it is for "nude's only". Off we go to another entrance. Lol. This time we were glad we could keep our clothes on. However, we were disappointed to see a vast area of a dry lake bed. We had to walk a bit more to get to the water. We lingered a bit. All in all, it's still a pretty place.
Lake Travis is way cool and super fun place to go to on a hot summer day to cool off and relax and enjoy the day.and that is why my family likes to go there.
The water used to be so beautiful & turquoise, but since people are using up all the water in this man made lake & mismanaging it, it's just kinda murky/muddy/sucky now. There aren't a lot of available boat ramps either. I hope it can fill up again someday
This is a huge and beautiful lake. I did a weekend getaway with the girls to this lake. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. The homes off of the lake are just magnificent. We rented a boat and two jet skis. There was a little overcast which caused a wonderful and pleasant breeze. My party stayed in one of the condos off and the lake was in our back yard. I will definitely be back to the lake to visit with my young daughter. This is a great place for couples, families, girls getaway, or if you want to just go and be somewhere solo.
There are a many touring/view points around this big lake with different parks, Water sport activities are available when water level in lake is up. Overall a good one to be.
But when there has been a long drought, not worth the trip. Hard to find swimming areas, alot blocked off due to low water. Check water level before making the trip. Very beautiful lake.
I've spent many a good time in the water and on the shores of Lake Travis. Due to the severe drought of the last several years, the water is at an all-time low, and ALL of the public boat ramps are now closed (no water to get boat into). HOWEVER, you can still rent a ski-boat from Just for Fun and get out there and do some serious skiing, since there's very little boat traffic!
Hoping the water levels come back soon! There's always something going on in the area, so visit (but please don't stay) 620 has enough traffic already! :)
The water is so low in lake right now. It seems very dirty too. I don't think it would be fun to do anything, besides its so hot all day and dry. We stayed in the Hollows resort rental house. The resort is nice but all we did is stay at the house and pool. I don't think it's worth to travel. I rather just stay in Austin would be more fun.
Wonderful lake...just hoping it comes back after the drought! Lots of boats, some beach area. Kayaking is nice if its not terribly windy. Jet skiing great!
My wife and I spent a full day on Lake Travis during our recent five-day stay in Austin. Our first encounter with Lake Travis was when we had lunch at the The Oasis, which is built high on a hill overlooking Lake Travis with spectacular views of the Lake. The same afternoon we rented a “Just For Fun” double deck pontoon boat for four hours. Coasting along Lake Travis on a steadily moving two story boat, while looking out onto lush green hills and the picturesque rippling water was a lot of fun. It is amazing how the Lake Travis water level is down over thirty feet in just the last few years. It was amazing to see the devastation caused by this huge water drop. Lake Travis is a huge Lake and is very peaceful and relaxing. There were not as many boasts on the lake as we were expecting to see.
We live near the lake but the past few years have been so dry that the lake is too low to enjoy. That creates a hazardous rise in bacteria levels too. The surface temp of the water has risen well above 85 degrees which is a breeding ground for all kinds of harmful pathogens. What makes it even worse is that the Lower Colorado River Authority wont close the flood gates so the lake can rise when it does rain. We are shocked at what our beautiful lake has turned into. Some areas look like the dry aired landscape on mars. Boat docks are abandoned and boats are toppled over on their sides. There are other issues to worry about too. Pumps in the lake to provide much needed water for emergency services, but they keep having to move them further and further out, and even when there is a fire there is no water pressure to fight it. A resort on the lake uses water pipes into the cooler water to cool the resort units, but they have not been able to do that because of the lake levels. So even businesses are suffering too.I hope we can get it back up to a fun place again, but that seems it will take decades of good rain to do it.
Lake Travis keeps lowering with the drought and too many boats on the lake during a holiday is loud, rough and dangerous. The lake is still beautiful. It just has less water to go around. Everyone needs to think RAIN to bring positive energy to filling up this wonderful hill country attraction.
The level of the lake is at record lows for the last 50 years and there is little hope of that changing soon. Probably not a good time to visit here.
When we were in Texas, our friends and family rented a party barge here at Lake Travis. We had so much fun, it's very beautiful, not in a flat area, but in a hilly area. I kind of reminds me of the Grand Canyon. This is a must do, when in the area.
