fort mckavett state historical park

We travelled out of our way to get to this fort but were so glad that we did. It is very well preserved and as we were the only visitors it really felt like we were stepping back in time. The location of the fort is very pretty and we took lots of excellent photos especially as it seemed deserted in a way. The grounds would be lovely in the hotter months I'm sure with plenty of picnic opportunities. Well worth the extra miles to get there!

Step back in time with a visit to Fort McKavett, and you'll appreciate hardships and hard work! The Fort buildings have been carefully maintained or restored, and everyone should have an opportunity to see how difficult life could be in the "Old West." Thankfully, because my mother is nearly 90, the kind park historian loaned us a golf cart, and we didn't miss a building or a site in the Fort!

One of the best frontier forts we have seen. Very lucky that the local people lived in it after it was decommisioned in the 1870s. Visitor center is the fort hospital, very well done and the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Several of them attended school at the fort in a one room schoolhouse. Has a row of Lt. houses, row of Captain houses, furnished and well done. You can't go in the houses but they have clear panels that you can view the insides. Some buildings are in ruins that add to the atmosphere. It is well worth the visit. In the following weekend they were going to have an reinactment. Probably do it very year.

Maybe the best preserved/restored forts in Texas. The buildings, inside and out, are well cared for and accurately kept. Nice museum that explains the history of the fort and the area. Friendly knowledgeable staff. The drive from Menard is a scenic one just about 30 miles.

Self guided tour through historic Fort McKavett allows you to step back in time. A nature trail passes by limestone quarry and kilns used to build the structures and the spring that supplied water to the fork. We saw a flock of wild turkey on the trail, as well.

WOW! you will never see another old Texas western fort as well preserved as this one. Lots of buildings still standing with interior furnishings. Most are as they were in the mid 1800's. Lots of history with this fort. Very nice place. Visitors center is in the old base hospital which has a very good museum/history showing the forts history. Everyone can enjoy this place. Handicap accessible. The staff provided us a golf cart to roam freely around the grounds and take our time to see everything.

Fort Mckavett was one of a string of forts establishing a line to keep the hostiles at bay. Left to nearly fall down, the State has been doing a very good job at restoring it. we visited on a cold day, and the sullen clouds, strong wind, gave the place a stark feel. One could just feel the troops stationed here. Gives one a good sense of fort life.

about 25 miles north of I-10 in west texas, ft. mckavett was established to control the apache & comanche hostiles (not saying they didn't have a good reason), and the station of the first buffalo soldiers who helped bring peace and prosperity to west texas. the visitor's center houses an interesting museum depicting the development and demise of the fort. many of the original building have been renovated and display items used at that locale. interesting bit of texas and american history.

We basically went to F.M. ti check out the Re-inactment of the soldiers and enjoyed everything about F.M. History, period dress and they even had animals from the Camel Soldiers.
