This is a cute little zoo, but the habitats are tiny. There is a fairly large variety of animals but in some cases, you feel bad that their space is do limited. The zoo might be good for kids under 8 or so but for older kids and adults, it takes maybe only 45 minutes to tour.
This charming zoo is located on a mountain outside of Roanoke Virginia and has a surprisingly extensive collection of animals! Check the website for evening celebrations at the zoo!
It's a rather small zoo, so it's easy to see everything in an hour or two. Despite the size, it's worth the visit as the views are spectacular and several of the animals are very rare and interesting. In particular, the snow leopards and red pandas are worth the visit alone.
I suppose it isn't fair to compare this little place to zoos like Cleveland, Atlanta, etc. Don't be expecting much, there are not many animals to see and not much ground to cover but it is enjoyable for small children and has a relaxing atmosphere.
This little zoo is still a sweet place to visit. Although small, there are some sweet cute exotic animals to see and I have always liked coming to the zoo for an afternoon out. It does not take long to go through, but I love seeing the animals. The snow leopard is stunningly beautiful, and the cougar is a treat! I think it's better in chilly weather because the animals seem to come out of their shelters more. I went on a cold October afternoon, and this was the first time I saw BOTH the leopard and the cougar. The zoo is nice for little kids and adults. The animals are well cared for. This is a special place in Roanoke, loved dearly by the locals.
Very nice exhibits though small but compact where u don't have to walk long distance to see animals up close ! Great for kids and family ! Beautiful park in front overlooking city
Great zoo visit for young and very young kids, particularly ages 2-7. Small site with compact exhibits including wolverine, vultures, cougar, goats, small walk-in aviary, small reptile house, etc. (few large animals). Fabulous zoo option for those who tire walking long distances and like to see exhibits from the shade of trees with beautiful views of the Roanoke Valley to boot. Pay-per-ride children's train ($2 per ride) and included playground. Another small playground and the infamous Mill Mountain Star are walkable from the site, as are a nature center, a few hiking trails, and a picnic shelter. "No frills" but does have a small food stand, gift shop, and AZA accreditation.
Mill Mountain Zoo is a small zoo with the animals kept in areas small enough to allow you to easily see them. Because of its size, it is ideal for toddlers who get tired of walking and want to get up close to the animals.
This zoo is a good little zoo. It's probably best for children. It's really a no frills zoo. It doesn't take long to get through which I think parents will like. I wish some the animal habitats were bigger, but this is an older zoo. All in all it is a good little zoo especially if you don't have much time. I visited in June of 2013.
The Roanoke zoo is a relatively small zoo located in a beautiful park. It doesn't have any spectacular exhibits but has a nice variety of animals. If your children are looking for lions, and tigers, and elephants they will be disappointed. It was not crowded even on a beautiful Saturday morning. It is really geared for young children ages 6 and younger. The children loved the bird aviary where there was a scarlet Ibis they could almost touch. The zoo is easy to get around. It is located on a mountain with great views of the city below. My only complaints that some of the animal enclosures seemed small given some of these animals are used to roaming large distances.
This zoo is small but packed with lots of animals and experiences right here in Roanoke, Great for a small little trip and then go visit the Discovery Center up near parking lot.
We recently needed a venue to gather several family members with young children. The zoo was the perfect place. It is enough to interest small children, but not large enough to tire them out. The discovery center was also nice since it is hands on, and I would like to see that portion enlarged. I remember the zoo being larger, decades ago.. If it were, it would be good for older children also. As it is, our 11 year old was interested, but I would not think a child much older would be entertained.
not the biggest Zoo in America. You will love the small atmosphere along with the view. You are up close and personal with the animals. Ride the train. Nice place to be able to share nature with your kids.
My 2nd trip to the zoo. Small & quaint. Good prices, unique animals, train wasn't running. Wonder about the size of the snow leopard pen, if it's big enough as one was just pacing. Staff quickly removed a copperhead snake found in the vulture enclosure. Didn't visit the gift shop. A snack bar would be a plus if the gift shop doesn't have one.
Looking for something to do with the kids to kill sometime and not spend a fortune. This was a nice find. Small Zoo but worth the price.
