Thank you very much for your positive feedback. We are happy to hear that you had an enjoyable visit, and we hope you will have the opportunity to visit again soon. The ants work very quickly, so you will certainly see lots of new growth during your next visit!
I had a discount coupon so we drove to Martinsville to visit this museum. What a pleasant surprise. Our first experience was ordering lunch at the little cafe. The attendant had made the soup, a tomato - vegetable that had a little kick. The sandwiches were fresh and tasty. We went to the lower floor where there were some live exhibits including snakes, turtles, baby trout and interconnected tubes of leaf-cutting ants going about their busy lives. Upstairs, the main exhibits included dinosaur fossils, ancient fossilized fungus found in a stone quarry in VA. I particularly enjoyed the exhibits that showed how ancient peoples used bone and stone for tools, jewelry etc. The next room featured the Chesapeake Bay many of the displays are interactive. Visitors may see inner workings where staff assemble the fossils and create exhibits. We were told the the backgrounds of some exhibits were from photographs taken by a staff member.I am so glad we took this trip. We were the only visitors after a group of school children left.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. Our collections are the core of why we exist, and it is our goal to share as many of these treasures as possible with researchers, educators, families and the general public. We do this through exhibits, research partnerships, education programs and more. We are planning for a new archaeology exhibit to open in September 2015; we hope you will have the opportunity to visit again soon!
This was such an awesome surprise, my nine year old and I had a great visit! The exhibits are very kid friendly with a lot of opportunity for hands on interaction.
Julio - Thank you very much for your recent visit to the museum and your kind review. We are always improving and adding new visitor experiences, and we hope you will get the chance to visit again soon. Thank you!
Tyaskin - We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to the museum. We have added several displays of various dinosaurs and other materials during the past year, and it has been great to see the positive reactions of our visitors. 'Clawd', the giant ground sloth that greats visitors in the lobby, recently spent several months on loan to another museum in North Carolina, so we are happy to have him back home. We hope you will have the chance to visit VMNH again soon. Thank you!

Thanks so much for your positive feedback. Reptile Day is definitely one of our most popular festivals, and we are excited to be planning for several exciting upcoming festivals. May 3 is the Bug Daze festival, July 26 is the Living on the Water festival, and October 18 is the Reptile Day festival. We hope you will be able to join us at one or more of these events!
Thank you for your recent visit, and for your very positive feedback. We are very excited about our current "Dinosaur Discovery" exhibit and we are happy to hear that you enjoyed the many different exhibits and displays.
What a fantastic State museum! Martinsville is a very small town (pop. ~13,000), but this museum is on par with natural history museums one would expect to find in much larger cities. Its permanent exhibits are exciting and showcase beautifully Virginia's fossil history. The travelling exhibits are fresh and often geared toward young children. There is an admission fee, though it is very modest, and they also participate in the ASTC Reciprocal Membership program, so ASTC Passport holders get in free.Martinsville is not on the way to anywhere, but the VMNH is destination enough in itself!
Our son visited with his 3-year-old twins. A boy that age is naturally in a dinosaur phase. The visit was thoroughly enjoyable and made quite an impression.
