We had so much fun in this small, but very informative museum. We visited on a Saturday and were so glad we did. We participated in a scavenger hunt that had us looking for particular items in the museum, which was a fun addition to simply viewing historical displays. We were thrilled to see the large display of Misty of Chincoteague, Stormy (Misty's foal), and the Bebee family, including their family Bible, as we had just completed reading those first two books in the series by Marguerite Henry. This will remain a favorite memory from our trip.
Amy, thank you for visiting our Museum. We are so glad that you enjoyed our new WW II exhibit. Thank you for your feedback about our exhibit on the American Indian groups of the region. We are in the process of doing new research that will add to and change this exhibit. The "First Visitors" title was meant to communicate that the native peoples who of this region primarily used Assateague and Chincoteague Island seasonally. According to what we understand, they hunted, fished, gathered and planted seasonally on these islands, while using sites on the mainland as more permanent homes. The exhibit title "First Visitors" will be changed when we re-vamp this exhibit. As you noted, it does not communicate the great respect that this community and museum have for the American Indians of the Chesapeake region.
Highlight of the visit. Has a lot of exhibits from the past ages of the area. Even husband was fascinated & I usually have to drag him into a museum.
We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this well set-up museum. It depicts some of the local history, the story of oystering, and some of the events that shaped the island and it's inhabitants. Best part - the taxidermist prepared Misty of Chincoteague and her foal Stormy.
Wonderful museum with Island history and of course Misty and Stormy The museum is a must on you vacation to Chincoteague Island
The Museum of Chincoteague is well-worth the visit, especially when tired of the beach, or when rain and/or cold encourages one to stay indoors. Exhibits depict the evolution of the human community on the island from prehistoric to contemporary times. Many of the exhibits are sponsored by local Chincoteague businesses and prominent families, and the artifacts have been donated by them.Do stay for the video about the historic March storm of 1962, which changed the landscape and economic development of CI dramatically. The candid interviews with the CI locals in the video demonstrate their terrific grit, self-effacing good humor, and resilience. These are tough but big-hearted, kind people, and their character is one of the reasons that we visit CI nearly every year.
What a wonderful way to learn about all of Chincoteague's varied history. I was amazed by all the things I learned. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. I will continue to go back every time we go there!
This museum is a gem that I missed on my wife's and my first visit to the island. It was open only on Thursday through Sunday so we didn't bother with it during the first few days of this visit. Rain drove us inside on Thursday and we stayed next door at the Best Western so we walked to the museum (nice!) and paid three dollars each for entry. What a treasure trove of Chincoteague memorabilia! I am usually not a history buff but the information was well presented and orderly necessitating my having to read each citation. Spend an hour or so there and learn about life on Chincoteague Island before you leave. The only disraction was that the diorama was inoperative but, so what? The docents were friendly and eager to answer questions although I'm sure they have answered the same questions many times before. Skip the "touristy" stuff (at least one) and get the down-low on what makes this island the special place it is.
Hi Ben. Thanks for visiting the Museum and for your feedback. We will certainly take your comments into consideration as we think about how to best display the iconic Misty and Stormy of Chincoteague.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review for our museum! Please come again soon. We have a new exhibit on Chincoteague Island during World War II opening this October. -E.B.
