Our hotel recommended this nightclub and we had a fantastic night. We are a white couple in our mid 50's from England but were made to feel at home at this great venue. the stage is on the dance floor. the food is good, standard Southern soul food. On the night we were there, there was a blues band who were good but were transformed when half way thru the opening set they were joined by Lady L, a truly great soul singer. For the second session she was joined by her husband who only happened to be one of the Temptations. Ok not the original line up but he was in the group in the early 70's. He sang 'papa was a rolling stone', wow he was sensational. We danced, we drank, we chatted and danced with the locals. If you happen to be Jackson, go to underground 119.
I consider 119 the coolest place to see live Muisc in downtown Jxn. The stage is about a foot from the dance area. I saw Jimbo Mathus recently & was close enough to see exactly what he was doing on guitar. The music has also become a little more varied lately which I like. The place is also a safe place & keeps a bouncer/security guard @ the main entrance. I hear the food is good as well though I must admit I haven't eaten there in a long time.
Loved the food, especially the dessert which was Peanut Butter Ice Cream with a touch of cayenne pepper in it. I was skeptical but it was fabulous. The entertainment portion of the evening was not as enjoyable, but not at the fault of the group playing. It was a young crowd and no one shut up long enough to hear any music at all. We left after the first set, apologizing to the entertainer on the way out
I would have totally missed this spot had I not asked some locals of "where to go". They suggested Underground 119 for some chill blues music and great bar/food. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, had nice wine selection and really good tapas menu. Local singer/songwriter Cody Cox was playing that night, and it his music was full of local flavor! What a great find!
Went to the Keep Calm and Rock concert. It was outside. I liked it. Didn't get a chance to peek inside but I Jerukus Singleton will be there this Friday, Jan 11. I'm planning to attend
While staying at The Fairview Inn in Jackson (see separate review) we were recommended by a member of the staff to try out Underground 119. We took a cab and when we arrived we were a bit dubious about the place as it was in a quiet street and was to all intents and purposes quite inconspicuous, being in the basement of a building (as the name would suggest). However, we proceeded down the steps and though the door and this lovely welcoming club greeted us. There is a cover charge but I can't remember exactly how much $5 or £10 each. There were only a few people there when we arrived but it was only 6.30pm. We sat at the bar and listened to the music for a while which was absolutely fabulous. We ordered some food which came up quite promptly. I had ordered fried green tomatoes and I have to say they were divine, absolutely delicious. The place started to flll up and within an hour was full. Everyone was extremely friendly, the bar staff were great with big friendly smiles and lots of other customers engaged us in conversation. The brilliant music continued throughout and by the last hour several people were up dancing. Before leaving we had photos taken with the band, check out the size of Tiger the saxophonist, his playing was incredible and what a friendly guy.I would thoroughly recommend this place to everyone, even if you're not keen on blues music the atmosphere is warm and friendly and the food brilliant. If you're in Jackson give it a try. If you have any questions please message me.
