If you enjoy older cemeteries, this is not to be missed. The grounds are beautiful, the stones interesting and the history immense.

The cemetery itself its beautiful, lots of historic burials and beautiful landscape...but the real problem is lack of available information on site, no Cemetery Office, reference material, or anything of the sort to help you out. We went on a Saturday late morning and were basically on our own to find a few Confederate Generals we were searching for. The closest building is a Health Department building that wasn't even open on weekends, and online says if you want any info on self guided or personally guided tours, it is only available Monday through Friday from the town visitor center, that is just insane and a hassle for any weekend tourist. I even went a block over to the town Library, while they were very friendly & courteous, they were no help on finding out any material to help better guide through the cemetery itself. To whomever runs the cemetery, make detailed maps and/or signs for known people more available, the experience would be a lot better for whomever visits. It is one of those sites sadly, where you are pretty much on your own from the start. Again, great cemetery, but there needs to be work done to the tourist information available.

We stopped in Holly Springs to check out this historic Cemetery. There are some really interesting graves and tombstones located here. Holly Springs played an important part in the Civil War as a supply base for Grants army. Therefore, it was a site of conflict and besides the variety of interesting sites in Hillcrest Cemetery, there are antebellum homes that were used as residences for the different Army's generals. Check out the house where Grant stayed for one.. Holly Springs itself is a quiet and lovely community. Would recommend taking some time to investigate the local attractions and this cemetery.

I visited Hillcrest Cemetery with three friends, one of whom is DAR and Daughters of the Confederacy. Several Civil War generals are buried in the cemetery in additon to many locals and other military heroes. I particularly liked the fact that several of the Civil War headstones contained interesting information about where and how the individual died. There are also statues in Hillcrest. The cemetery is right outside Holly Springs downtown and easily accessible. There is no fee to visit. Parking is easy. There were no tours when we visited, but we had no trouble enjoying our time there. I understand that locals dress in 19th century period clothing and offer tours during pilgrimage in the spring.
