They are a just a little north of Greenville, MS on highway 1. Worth the stop and they stand out from the surrounding delta. A good interesting historic site to visit.
Wonderful museum and actual access to the Indian Mounds. Located a few miles north of Greenville but worth the drive.
Started about 1100 AD, the mounds are mostly still intact. The dwellings are gone but you can get an idea of primitive life. The artifacts collected in the museum are wonderful.
Visitors can actually climb to the top of the mound at this site. MANY programs for families on the weekends. Wonderful.
The two staff, actually preparing for a group visit, provided me with great information on the site allowing me to get the most out of the visit. They also helped me understand the wider story of the native americans who lived along the Mississippi and a little more about the area in general. I felt disappointed that I was the only person there! Make a donation it is worth it.
This is where I met my wife 35 years ago when we both worked there. I planted most of the trees that are there now and then served 26 years in the Navy.
About 6 miles north of the intersection of Highways 82 and 1 in Greenville, the mound grounds are open dawn to dusk with a museum that has various hours of operation. My visit was on a hot humid day, so remember to bring a hat and water. There is no admission but there is a donation request. There's a short movie to view (less than 5 minutes I think) if you wish. The docent at the museum was a wealth of interesting information. These mounds are still being excavated by local universities and professors on a regular basis. The museum has several interesting artifacts and a fascinating map depicting mound locations throughout primarily the eastern portion of the country. Picnic grounds in the shade was a plus. Washrooms are located inside the museum. While crossing a wooden bridge to start my hike I saw water snakes, turtles, geese and other water critters. Great for families.
This is a must stop to hear the history of this area. You can see where many mounds are located from miles north of this area to miiles south of this area. Each mound has a different story, reasons for why it was built and what it is made of.
We stopped in here because this museum and park is amoung the 1000 places to see before you die - or it is in the book :) It is an nformative Museum and eternal grouds with the largest of the mounds climable via steps. There is a fascinating map showing all mound sites in MS and another of the mound locations in America. In additon a beautiful mural inside the museum depicts the life by the fist in habitats of the area and the tools they used.
I was pursuing my Master's and was given an assignment that required me to visit Winterville Mounds. It was so interesting, until I went back several times following the couse.
