First visit to Detroit. Eastern Market was on the "must see" list. Busy and exciting. So many fruits, vegetables, flowers, herbs, breads, sweets, ethnic foods.....so much stuff, so little time. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
I live on the western side of Michigan, and have a Bed and Breakfast. I kept hearing about the Eastern Market. Since I am a food lover, I was intrigued by the fantastic descriptions my guests would give. We found a bit of downtime in late February and set out across the state on a Michigan Winter Vacation. We made many stops and had lots of adventures. But holy cow, what a gem Detroit has in that market!!! It is worth the trip, even in the dead of winter. I made so many purchases and think I could live in Detroit if only to go to this market every week. We followed up our market visit with a coney dog taste-test between downtown's Lafayette and American Coney Dog restaurants.
This is probably the best and legendary farmers market which I've ever seen. Amazing products, fresh produce , organic supply , exceptional farmers. You can't go wrong on this one. This place is huge and is in downtown Detroit , fantastic feel to the place on Saturdays. I would highly recommend this Eastern farmers market for people looking to buy great quality produce.
We thought parking would be a problem and maybe in the summer it is hard to find a spot, but we didn't have any trouble. We bought lots of bread, sweets, coffee, meat sticks, cheese and other goodies. We'll be back!
Everyone is down on Detroit but I have found that if a person looks then they can find a gem of something in every town along the trail. This is A GEM in Detroit !!!!It's just cool and if you want the big market day extravaganza then make sure to check out Flower Day !!! Been at the Eastern Market many many many times !!!
Been back in Detroit for a month and I try to go every other Saturday. This is one of the best markets of this type in the country, especially with all the surrounding stores. When I used to go down there in the late 60's and early 70's, it was not as clean or safe. I always feel safe down there. As for the person who claimed to have their hub caps stolen, do cars still have "hub caps"? Where the heck did you park, down some alleyway?Gratoit Meat market is just over the highway and has great meats and poultry.
We've been going to Eastern Market when Samuel Brothers (corned beef) was packed starting at 5 a.m. on Saturdays but it is a little more dangerous now a days. Last year had our hubcaps stolen and two young kids started following us and demanded money Told them to go to hell. Then as I was looking for grapes I suddenly turned and a man had his hand in my right pocket. He dropped a $20 he had taken from my pocket but I managed to grab it on the ground before he could move. I told a Detroit cop and he just looked at me like I was the bad guy. I like going across the street for a pizza and then to Germack. We then stop off in Hamtramck at either Polish Village (best Polish restaurant in Michigan) and then to the second best place, Krakov on Jos. Campau between Carpenter and Davison.
We love visiting Saturdays, shopping and talking to local food vendors. They are open year-round--although there is more selection and much bigger crowds from May-October, many vendors also sell at the market through the holidays and into January, and you can avoid the crowds off season. Local beef, fresh eggs, pork, baked goods are always available along with specialty coffees, chocolates, and more. Don't forget to shop the specialty stores on the perimeter of the market. Highly recommended for Detroit locals and visitors alike.During peak seasons there is also a Tuesday market and a Sunday market that specializes in Michigan-made goods. Call or visit the site beforehand.
If you need an uplifting Saturday trip head downtown Detroit to the Eastern Market. On Saturdays the focus is foodie paradise, on Sundays it is Detroit based products. Don't miss places include the Capuchin On the Rise bakery booth. Cinnamon rolls to die for made by men who are working toward positive life changes, Detroit Pickles and more local veggies than you can count. Devries Cheeses (south end of market in a brick building) formerly Hirts has the largest selection of fantastic cheeses in a great vintage building. New owner Dave did a long overdue remodel that kept the best of the old and combined it with a better flow. Rockys Peanut Company is fantastic and the twin brothers flying all over the store keep you laughing. Last but not least is a great Art Market across Gratiot in the old Germack Nut Factory and an antiques store right along the side of the produce sheds. Over all it is a must visit in Detroit.
Farmers from all over Michigan and upper Ohio come toEastern Market to sell their produce. Actually, you will alsosee some "artzy" sellers so have fun
Stopped by a yr ago on a Friday and only the permanent shops were open. Stopped by on a Sat(2 days ago) and even though it was 40 degrees and raining--it was very enjoyable. Nice mix of vendors, people and goods. Still a decent crowd. Mix of produce; flowers; foods; baked goods etc. Can't imagine how crowded it would be on a summer day when it is 100 % open.
They have everything u need; I really like the seafood mart, got whatever u want, prices are nice. I went down here because I was in town for a family dinner and my relatives kept telling me about this Eastern Market, so I decided to go and check it out. When I went inside I couldn't believe it; it was the biggest meat market I've ever seen, I didn't know where to start, I had to walk thru it twice to get myself together, try have sooo many choices of meat to choose from; they got everything u need
Took another trip to Eastern Market this morning - what a great way to start your Saturday morning. Definitely not as crowded in the fall as it is in the summer, but there is still a great selection of fruit, veggies, and much more. Vendors are very friendly and attentive. Scored some of the last Michigan blueberries, as well as plenty of parsely and cilantro to make a massive batch of chimmichurri sauce. Arrived around 8:30 AM and there was plenty of parking. If you haven't made a trip to Eastern Market, you definitely need to carve out some time to experience the sights, sounds, and smells.
was just there today 9/27/14 & it was jammed as usual--people from all around enjoy this place--they have been opening on sundays but tomorrow will be the last sunday for the season--youeven find 'chicken crack' at rocky's--see the picture--the rooster pictured can be yours for $250--LOL--they seem to be offering more healthy products than our last visit--just love thisplace....
High quality and freshness of what the farmers and locals bring to this market is what sets it apart from all others. The "vibe" is certainly there and there is no mistaking that. Whether its a bite to eat or fresh produce or flowers, you can't beat the cost and quality/selections. I am still on the fence about the meat vendors however as I haven't seen their prices as competitive as they should be.
