Went on a Monday night during the first week of December. Not crowded gives you space and time to enjoy the time on the ice. skate rental feel is reasonable, if you don't own your own pair.
Campus Martius is the heart of the 'D'. Start here, enjoy skating and winter lights or listen to the music, watch a movie or relax on the beach :)
Smack in the middle of all the new office space and restaurants, Campus Martius is the place for skating in the winter, lounging during lunch and people watching any old time. As of March 2015 the restaurant is closed for updating, but there are many other places to eat within walking distance,
Fun can be had by all ages on this ice rink! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the quality of the ice is just fine for having fun. We brought our own skates and changed on a bench outside but most people rent their skates and change inside the tent. Everyone is in a good mood and the music, lighting and fire pit add to the ambiance
There is so much going on at Campus Martius all the time, winter, spring, summer and fall. Over the last few years, the city has developed this area in to a wonderful gathering place in the heart of downtown. Last weekend was Winter Blast, with zipline gliding, skating, ice sculpture, snowshoeing and so much more for people of all ages. During the warm months, many of the city's festivals take place or spill over into Campus Martius, including the famous Jazz Festival. Summer brings movies under the stars at the park. And its location on Woodward Avenue means it's a central viewing area for the Thanksgiving day parade. Crowds gather for the annual tree lighting ceremony in December. The area has beautiful spring and summer gardens, and fall brings bales of hay, mums and pumpkins. Winter has the largest Salvation Army kettle and the city's Christmas tree. And there's always the Soldier's and Sailor's Monument which dates back to the Civil War era. There are lots of restaurants in the vicinity, from coffee shops to steak houses. The People Mover stops nearby and it's only a few blocks away from Greektown, Hart Plaza, the Guardian Building, and other attractions.
Really appreciated the fire pit on Valentine's Day which was one of the coldest days ever, and watching the skaters.
We decided to head to Downtown Detroit for brunch and a little ice skating. What a great decision we made. We went to the park in the early afternoon, it wasn't overly crowded, and the weather and view were great. Some of the inexperienced skaters darting out in front of us made it a little chaotic but overall a great time!
The skating ring in the winter is a magnet for all kinds of people. Bring your camera, or rent some skate, and enjoy the day.
Who would have thought, five years ago that spending the afternoon in Detroit with your family would be so great? The ice rink provided a fun time for both kids and adults, nearby hot cocoa for everyone, and then off for some saganaki at Pegasus in Greektown made our large family gathering downtown complete. The lights on the Christmas tree and music by which to skate, just wonderful.
I love the downtown area but campus martius park is the place to be. It always has something going on and I run into someone I know everytime I am there. I love the atmosphere and the setting. It is a great place for a date, to eat and to just hang out downtown to enjoy your significant other.
There is always something going on at Campus Martius! It's Detroits version of Time Square. Whether you are there for a concert during the summer, or ice skating in the winter, you will not regret visiting! It's right in the middle of everything! I enjoyed ringing in the New Year here with the ball drop! Definitely a great experience!
Great place to take the family and just take it all in on a winter evening. Skating, horse carriage rides, music, food. First time there and we will definitely be going back
Many things to do there, ice skating with the family on a winter night is the best experience! Summer days and evenings are great too.
Great activity in the winter months especially for families. The tree is decorated nicely. The skating rink is maintained well with periodic freshning up by the Zamboni. You can do carriage rides to see downtown Detroit. Great opportunity for photos. Skate rental and admission will cost about 10-13 dollars per person. Make sure you don't forget your socks. You might also consider bringing snacks for the kids. There is a snack place on site, but can get pricey. I highly checking out this attraction.
If your looking to immerse yourself in Christmas spirit Campus Martius has it in spades. A beautiful 60' Christmas tree highlights the park atop the fountain. Adorned with over 16,000 lights this tree is a beauty. Holiday music fills the air blending with the laughter from the ice skating visitors. The park is nicely decorated and a wonderful place to visit even on a chilly December eve.
