If you are history lover go for it, if you are nature lover go for it, if you want a perfect view from islands go for it. We loved it even when it was cloudy and rainy.
My ten year old is really into civil war and he had a blast! The other kids enjoyed it as well. What a great way to experience history. Not allot of options for food was the only draw back. Plan on spending a few hours so you can really enjoy everything there. We took horse your there and walked back
The history is very interesting and well worth that big hill walk. Check out all the flags that the Girl Scouts raise and lower every day
It was well worth the visit and had a great view of the the island. There was a canon demonstration along with a gun salute which scared my 2 1/2 year old son so beware. Take a lunch, great place to take a break from sightseeing although there was drink and I think ice cream for sale in the Fort.
What a great place to explore with or without kids. You get a good idea of what it was like living at the fort long ago. The staff was knowledgeable, reenactors were friendly and stayed in character. It was great having the scouts volunteering and the view is unbelievable. There is also a nice place for a liitle lunch that is right on the side of the fort so you have a great view of the Straits.
We loved the fort, the displays, the books in the gift shop are unique and reasonably priced. The grounds are well kept and you feel like you have gone into the past.
This attraction got me really excited! I loved how the soldiers remained true to the period. The fort bathrooms were really interesting but the best part was the fort medical facility! They used holograms to narrate and it was really splendid! Viewing some of the original medical equipment was extremely interesting!
I just love spending time on Mackinac island, especially it's rich history at the Fort Mackinac in the State Park. I especially enjoy my carriage tour & my awesome driverTom, who was very helpful, supportive & friendly. The Fort walking tour was great fun & educational among with a great lunch. I so enjoyed watching the scouts & the other fort soldiers & other historical characters. Mackinac Island is an awesome magical place to spend time & the fort is ful of history!
Great views from the fort, enjoyed the gun and cannon demonstrations, renovated historic buildings & interesting displays & videos. Eat lunch or snack at Tea Room on front cliffside w/yellow umbrellas (enter from inside front of fort), ***PRETTIEST YUMMIEST MILKSHAKES--have to ask, not on menu! NOTE: there is a steep walk up the front + stairs or steep walk up side hill then around to back--take your time, rest occasionally & "enjoy the view"; if you're worried, pay for a horse & carriage "taxi" but might have a short wait.
Great experience of a historical aspect of the island. The fort affords some very gorgeous views of the island. The staff are dressed in the uniforms of the time, and give tours of the various buildings and their historical uses. There is also a tea room - the service is average, but you will probably be a bit hungry after walking around - which makes the fort feel more comfortable. Then, once finished, the exit of the fort leads to a road down a hill to the main street and shops, which is very convenient.Definitely worth the admission ($12 per person, if I recall), for the sights and the history.
We took a horse-drawn carriage tour of the island, which took us to Fort Mackinac on top of the hill! It was a wonderful visit, historically intriguing, and we had lunch seated outside the restaurant there overlooking the lake and the town below. It was a wonderful experience. We were able to obtain accommodations at Haan's 1830 Inn on the island, which was a wonderful experience, in itself! Such friendly and wonderful hosts!!You can reserve accommodations at one of the Island's hotels/B&Bs, or reserve one on the mainland, and ferry over for the day/evening.
If you're visiting Mackinac Island you can't forget to check out Fort Mackinac. It has the coolest backstory and history. It also has great views of the island. I had a great time visiting Fort Mackinac.
We go to the island every other year and the kids love the experience of the Fort. From the firing of the cannon, to the tour guides and interactive attractions. Always a good time. 3 years ago, we were on the Island and ran into the Harlem Globetrotters in August who were on the Island for a charity game and we decided to watch at the only school on the Island. Way cool pictures and personal access.
We enjoyed our trip to the fort. It's clearly one of the highlights of the island. The views from fort are gorgeous, and if you enter from the front gate, the pathway up to the fort itself had beautiful views. The interpreters were all friendly and helpful, and the it's fascinating to go through the historic structures. When we were there, the fort seemed mainly focused on the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and I do wish they spent more time on the Fort's founding and early years. It's also pricey and it would be nice if there was a combined ticket for Fort Mackinac and Colonial Michilimackinac (although it was nice to get admission to the Biddle House, Astor Store, Moonigan Art Museum etc with the ticket). If you are a history fan, OR just want a a good feel for the history of the impression of the area, visit Colonial Michilimackinac on the mainland before your visit to the island, and then visit Fort Mackinac. They make a great pair.
There are so many things that can be learned about the Fort and how things were for people during the era. It was interesting to learn about how medicine was practiced back in that time. This is a great Michigan treasure and if you have children, it is something that they need to experience!
