The Carr Valley Cheese Factory is about a thirty minute drive from Wisconsin Dells through the beautiful countryside. This is not a place you would just happen by but it is well worth the trip to find it. Between 8:00-10:00 AM you can learn all about the process of making cheese. Staff was very friendly. Lots of samples to try and many interesting products available for purchase.
This is a small place that was fun for a short visit. We were able to watch some of the cheese production even though we didn't come until about 11am. The woman at the counter was very informative and friendly as well as helpful in our selection of cheese. The drive to the factory was fun as well through the beautiful rural countryside. Definitely worth the time to come.
Loved the welcome we got walking into the cheese factory. We were shown how the cheese was made on a video, which was very interesting to get an up close look! It made me want to work in a cheese factory! The gals at the counter were more than friendly and helped us with our questions. Been here twice and would go back every time we are in Wisconsin! If you love cheese, this is the place you want to be!
If you have to go to Wisconsin, you might as well look for Cheese. We found it at the Carr Valley Cheese shop, where we found enough to keep us happy. Their artisan cheeses are fairly standard varieties with some cave aged and goat and sheep cheese. Their bleu cheese was very good as was their cave aged sheep cheese. It's worth a stop.
This place has always been good, but the added number of cheeses over the last few years has been wonderful. My favorite is the 8 yr old cheddar.
We were recently crossing Wisconsin on a Cross-Country RV trip and made a quick stop at this little shop. They were not making cheese at the time of our visit but we were able to view the large vats and watch a short video. There were numerous samples to try and souvenirs to browse. We ended up making a few purchases and we are certainly glad we stopped.
30 minutes west of Wisconsin Dells (I-90/94) and about 2 miles south of La Valle. Go before 11am, Monday to Saturday to see World Champion cheese makers practicing their routine. The staff is friendly, the samples are plentiful, and the SW Wisconsin countryside makes getting there a pleasure. My 20 year old daughter thought it was great as well. And, oh yes, the cheese is spectacular.
We often buy Wisconsin cheese but never had a chance to see it being made until we visited this attraction. It's a little off the beaten path. Do not depend on GPS. Follow driving instructions in the ads. It's a small but very busy production facility. We arrived at 9:30am and fortunately they were still making cheese. You have to watch the operation from behind a window to maintain sanitary conditions. One of the employees described how they made cheese curds and pressed them into rounds before they were shipped out. They sell a variety of cheeses on the premises. Parking is limited to a few cars, but visitors came and went after a short visit. No admission charged!
A small but charming place to see cheese being made. The person behind the counter took the time to explain what was being made and our family could watch the goat cheese being made. We tried many samples as you really can't go wrong with any of the cheeses that are made. Of course we took some home along with their wonderful squeaky cheese curds and great cheddar garlic cheese. We plan to come back next year to enjoy the cheese and make more memories.
We visited in the morning when they were busy making cheese which they do six days a week. One of the counter persons took the time to explain the operation and answer our questions. This was definitely a great learning experience. Took some freshly made squeaky cheese (cheese curds) with us for the road and boy were they good, They have a superb variety of their cheeses for sale. It is a very small place, but a very large experience. Highly recommended if you are anywhere near here.
This was well worth driving an extra dozen miles. We learned an awful lot about cheese production while watching the process. Staff members are friendly and knowledgeable. We started sampling and couldn't resist buying. I thought we'd purchased too much to carry, but today we have nothing left in the fridge but memories of great products.
Love the cheese curds - $5.75lb - I thought tasted a better than the Market Square Cheese - However I prefer the Market Square store for selection of various items-they sell their curds for $4.99 for 12oz. We like to warm up the curds in the microwave - still has the fresh squeaks but brings out the flavor more.
Wonderful cheese shop for cheese & more! Great selection and very friendly service. I stopped in once with my daughter who is in the military and they almost brought me to tears when they thanked her for her service to her Country. Great cheese and super people! :)
Carr always has fresh cheese curds, still warm (the best way to eat them). They have added a lot of other cheeses since I was there years ago. They have an assortment of goat cheese and even sheep cheese. I saw something called "bandaged goat cheese"....thought that was interesting. They also carry another WI favorite, hard salami. They have a window so you see into the cheese making room. Definitely worth driving out of the way to get to.
We really enjoyed seeing how the cheese was made! We had a personal guide named Ellie who answered all of our questions, we watched a brief, but informative video and got to watch the process "live"! Tasty samples and plenty of cheese to purchase were available!
