This is the closest WI State campground to our former home. So, when we come back to Wisconsin for annual medical visits this is our go-to choice; not because it's close, but because it's a wonderful family campground, with separation between sites, a variety of campsites, and a nice environment. I almost don't want to give it a good review because it's unknown by many folks who even live nearby, but we like it enough to return time and time again.
We went here on a spur of the moment to have something to do. Like most of the things we do, it combined his interests and mine. We walked five miles, seen plenty of bird species, walked down to the pier and watched the turtles come for air and swim back to the bottom. We looked around at the camp sites for possible future travels and they looked very nice.
First, the trails around the various lakes are great for families of all ages. They have very gentle inclines, are wide, and have some pretty incredible vistas. In mid-June, there were still some muddy areas on the trails, but mostly in very good shape. We saw a turtle, pheasants, and plenty of other song-birds (well, actually heard more than saw them). There are very good, large fire-pits, and plenty of space for tents. With all the water around, one should be prepared for mosquitoes, as they certainly are there in abundance. We camped with several other families, and a couple of them had to deal with tics. The area schedules learning activities that are pretty cool, worth making even a day-trip.The out-houses are ripe, but that's to be expected. I'm not aware of any showering facilities. One thing, we stayed at group site F, which is at the end of a cul-de-sac (great when you have a bunch of kids running around, and riding bicycles). It's a nice, open site (but not a lot of tree-shade). If you look at a map, that particular site is very close to a fairly busy road. There is quite a bit of noise, even through most of the evening, and it seems like everyone is driving a semi, or a Harley-Davidson. There are sites further from the road (e.g. group site C) that are more shaded.
We go to Bong State a lot during the spring, summer and fall to fish and hike and enjoy the beauty of the state park. We just love going there as it's so nice and peaceful.
I have hiked at Bong a few times and have enjoyed both the location and the natural environment....lakes, wetlands, birds, trails. If you are looking for a secluded and peaceful recreation area....this will do the trick.
See the welands and take advantage of some of the points of interests at the Bong State Recreation Area
We enjoy this park. We need handicap sites for us, and they have a couple of very nice ones. bathrooms and facilities are very clean, and so is the camping area. Lots to see and do there. We go often
This area was originally planned as a airforce base named after Richard Bong an ace pilot. The base was never built and for a while the land was open for public use. Mostly upland game hunting. Now it has been developed and managed as a recreation area by the state.
Great place to visit for bike riding, boating, camping, snowmobilles, cross country skiing, nature hikes, and so much more. Lots of trails and always something new to see. Show your support and buy a year-round pass. My family loves having such a great nature park so close to home, but its worth the drive from Illinois, too.
Very expansive area with fishing, rock launch, nature preserves. There is a cost to get in, but you can talk you way in to preview with any luck.
What an oustanding facility to train your puppy to be a big girl (or boy). Plenty of room to train and the staff are very helpful about directing and assisting you if you are new to this type of training or the area.
many family friendly/kid friendly activities, nature walks, great for birding, nice campsites, great beach
Nice area with lots of things to do! From hiking trails, fishing, swimming, picnicking, camping. You can even ride atv's & dirt bikes on their track fly model planes. The staff was nice, great prices. The campground was a little crowded for our likes but we expected that. Pit toilets are available and you get what you expect with that. They do have showers/toilets as well which was nice with very small kids. We had a great day and there are quite a few Geocaches in the area! For us a 30 minute drive from home great for a nite away!
We booked late for Memorial Day weekend and this was he only place available; never a good sign. The staff is very helpful and extremely friendly. The sites are smallish. The description on ours said there was a double-wide driveway, hardly accurate and the site was level which was an outright lie. The fire pit had a large bare area surrounding it which was about the oddest thing I've ever seen. Luckily we arrived after the rain stopped because I can't imagine what a disaster that would have been. The beach area is nice but the swim area is very small. Bathrooms were not the cleanest I've seen. Still, the Wisconsin state park system is one of the best in the country and an outstanding value. The proximity to the metro area is also a plus as you can always find something to do.
Hard for this person to find but a very nice place.
