There are several very challenging hiking trails that wind along the bluffs of the Mississippi that provide spectacular views. For those not up to hiking, a road leads to one of the best overlooks and picnic areas. There are also "star parties" each month May - October where local astronomy enthusiasts share their knowledge and their telescopes. Definitely worth the admission fee if you are planning on hiking or camping.
Beautiful vistas from the top of a bluff of the surrounding bluffs, confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers, railroad and river bridges. Hiking trails down to the river. Short and long wooded hiking trails, easy and more difficult. Campgrounds. There is a one hour $5.00 fee for those traveling through not wanting to spend longer times.
Well i've read some of the reviews and everyone seems to really love this park, the only thing that upsets me is that we will be camping in Homestead, and another review said that the bathrooms are closed cause they are being worked on and you have to ride to the other camp ground to shower:(Well we will see how that goes, i"ll review when our trip is over:)
My husband surprised me with an anniversary trip to Wyalusing State park. It was even more beautiful than I anticipated. We spent a night camping on the ridge. Very well kept park, free showers were clean and hot. We had coffee in the pavilion during a storm.
My boyfriend and I camped here over a weekend in August 2014. Our site was # 243 in the Homestead Campground. This state park is a really good size.. there are two separate campgrounds in the park. Homestead seemed more private, then there is the Wisconsin Ridge Campground which has many sites right on the bluff overlooking the river. We loved our campsite.. there was much privacy and it was a good size. We did have to drive up to the Wisconsin Ridge Campsite to shower though because the showers in Homestead are under construction right now. Showers were free, clean and spacious. Our dog came along with us and most everywhere seemed very pet friendly. Unfortunately, it rained for about half of our weekend, so didn't get to do as many of the trails as we wanted to. We took our mountain bikes on the Mississippi Ridge Trail which was challenging, but awesome! I'd definitely recommend that. We plan to return next year to camp again and hopefully check out more of the hiking trails. I would recommend this park just for a day or for an extended camping trip!
Camped in site 137, on the bluff. What an amazing view and a clean site to stay. Well worth the $12 a night at this state park. Plenty of things to do at the park and surrounding area!
We have gone to this park for the last 3 years over the fourth of July. The last 2 years the river leaves have had an affect on water activites. Doesn't stop us! There are plenty of hiking and biking trails.. The camp is great. If you want a view, camp on the ridge. You over look the WI river. The trails have great lookout points. We don't have issue with critter as long as you clean up. The pit toilets are great for pit toilets. The showers and normal bathrooms are clean. Prairie Du Chein is a great little town. The island has neat history. Cross over to IA for some other cool shops and some gambling. Pikes Peak on IA side is also a great place to hike. I think this will always be our 4th of July location. Plan on going back in Fall to see all the colors. Reserve early!
We made a quick side trip to Wyalusing State Park about 5 miles south of Prairie Du Chien, we didn't have much time to explore the park fully but discovered that it offers many hiking trails, picnic grounds and a point to view the confluence of the wisconsin river with the Mississippi river. It's a view to die for. I will attach a couple of pictures later. Must see if you are in the area. There is a fee to enter the park but, the price in minimal for the view you get. Beware of the gnats and flies, try a mix of vanilla and water to repel those pesky insects.
My wife and I spent two days at Wyalusing State Park. We did not camp at the campground but spent time hiking the trails and kayaking in the river. The camp is located on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in South Western Wisconsin. Many of the vistas from the campsite overlook the Wisconsin River delta where it joins the Mississippi River. Although we visited the park on Memorial Day weekend, the park still had open campsites. We completed three hikes: Old Wagon Road Trail, Sand Cave Trail, and Sentinel Ridge Trail. The Sand Cave trail, as the name suggests, provides a tour of intriguing caves. The caves aren't very big but were fun to see regardless. The Sentinel Ridge trail had the best views of the river, but there were places where it was very steep downhill so we had to be careful. Also, keep a watchful eye as the trail runs close to sheer cliffs in a few locations. The campground also rents out kayaks and canoes; however, be aware that when the water is high that they will not rent them out so call ahead for water conditions if you are intending to rent a kayak from them. Although the water was high, the current was not very fast at this location. The facilities seemed very nice. There was adequate parking, a concession stand, volley ball court, tennis court, and a basketball court. The only downfall that I could see is that there were ALOT of bugs (mostly gnats) that were constantly harassing us. We really enjoyed our time at this state park and next time we make a camping trip to this area we are planning on staying here.
We only went for a quick visit but could see this is somewhere we would like to camp and hike in the future. Beautiful surroundings, lots of areas to hikes, an interpretative trail with some historical information and Native American mounds. The campsite had a small store.
Between hiking the excellent trails & canoeing the Mississippi River there was never a dull moment. Campsite was very private with trees on 3 sides.
Gorgeous views. Nice campgrounds and amenities. I camped here years ago and visited for the day recently and it's still one of the prettiest around. Looking forward to coming back to camp here again.
Perched high above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, Wyalusing is a gem of a state park. My wife and I visited on July 28, 2013 for the day. We did a short hike down to Treasure Cave, passing several overlooks where you can see all the way to the corn fields of Iowa. We then did the longer hike from there to the boat launch, passing several Effigy Mounds. But the best part of Wyalusing is that you are standing on the spot where old Jacques Marquette (one of two people whose statue stands in the United States Capitol representing Wisconsin - the other being Fighting Bob Lafollette) first entered the Mighty Mississippi from the Wisconsin River back in 1673. Shortly after doing this, Marquette founded a great basketball powerhouse of a university on the other side of Wisconsin. Pay tribute by shooting a few buckets at the nearby basketball court.
My family has been camping at Wyalusing almost every year for over 30 years. We always try to stay on the bluff sites, you can't ask for a better view in Wisconsin. Now that I moved to Missouri I still make a trip every summer to visit Wyalusing with my family. We enjoy fishing from their dock on the river or from our canoe nearby. Their trails are well marked and maintained. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. The campground has a great family atmosphere and is usually very quiet at night. The park has upgraded their facilities over the years we have visited. Prairie du Chien often has fun historical events to see or fun local shops to visit. This is a great campground for those people that don't want the cookie cutter bland campgrounds you find elsewhere.
We stayed on site 124 on the ridge. Jaw-dropping views, this is not your typical tree-tunnel campsite. The bathrooms and shower house are great. Showers are hot and roomy enough that your clothes and towel stay dry. Lots of shelves and power outlets in the ladies' room (really nice for charging the phone). Rented kayaks at the concession stand and paddled the water trail. It was well-marked. Saw tons of wildlife and had the river to ourselves for the most part. We did not paddle continuously and still completed it in under 3 hours.
