This is a beautiful beach with golden sand that was quite soft. We enjoyed sitting on the beach, and the swimming was fine on the day we visited in March (no currents or rough waves). You can walk for quite awhile on the beach, and at the far end there are some interesting tide pools and waves splashing up on the cliffs. We were thrilled to spot a big splash out in the ocean, and then enjoyed a humpback and her calf entertaining us for about a half hour with breaching, flukes and fin slaps. Ample parking and several restrooms.
Lots of beaches near Kona are lava, rocky or coarse sand. Not Hapuna. My group all thought of San Diego as what this area most resembled. Soft sand, wide beach area and lots of people. Frequent visitors bring beach chairs, umbrellas and ice chests. Covered shelters with tables dot the area. You can easily wade out quite a way as it is shallow. Saw lots of belly boarding. I had hoped to snorkel but this is not a good snorkel bay. Plus, the day we were there it was windy and the surf was up. You pay to park, but it's only $5. We saw wild turkeys, mongooses, cardinal and of course feral cats. If you are in search of a comfortable sandy beach, swallow water for little kids, picnic areas and decent restrooms this is where you need to be. Get here well before noon even on a weekday because the large lot fills up.
We loved this beach so much we came twice. It was a bit of a drive from our condo in Keauhou but the boogie boarding was great. My children loved it! The sand was fine and golden. And the sunsets were supreme!
We first visited as simple tourists driving down to see the beach area - but we came back the next day as bonafide beach people - the sun, surf and sand were just perfect!!!! Very clean and nice collection of sand people.....could have been tourists or regulars....ample parking, showers and rest rooms. Lovely spot. They do charge for parking fee, but it is minimal for the beauty they share....
This is a busy beach because it is so so beautiful and the waves are much fun for playing. If you like a less populated area then it won't be your favorite spot, but if you don't mind sharing it is pretty spectacular.
Easy beach to get to, a bit of a drive from Kona but well worth it. $5 parking fee, several pavilions for shaded camping or plenty of area to beach it. Wonderful sandy beach that stretches out deep and wide making plenty of room even though it seems everyone has the same idea. Can be a bit crowded but the surf is perfect for body boarding. Need to be a fair to good swimmer as there is a strong current but the break is gradual - no drop offs, and a lifeguard on duty so bring lots of sunscreen and water. Also, showers at the pavilion.
I was driving north along the Kohala Coast and pulled in here on a whim. What a beautiful place. The water is clear and green. It's easy to wade in. There's enough surf to be fun, without battering you around. Restrooms and showers, picnic area. I didn't try out the snack shop. I snorkeled some. There is a little sea life to observe around the rock outcrops, but not in the sandy areas. At the time I was there (late morning, mid-week), it was not too crowded. Nice spot for a day at the beach. $5 fee at the gate, but the attendant was not there and the machine to take fees was not working.
We visited Hapuna Beach again ( last time Feb 2014) and see that the washrooms are much cleaner and there appear to be more covered tables and in general the facilities are much improved. Just remember there's a $5 charge per car to park (if ur are not a local ) in the lot which is ok, especially if u hAve a lot of beach gear. If not, park outside along the road for free. Nice beach with two lifeguard stations to keep an eye on the foolish who get too near the rocks or into a riptide.
Although it was a cloudy afternoon, we still had a nice time on the beach people watching, and enjoying the waves. They were rolling in anywhere from 4-8 feet and had a lot of power for the body surfers and the bodyboard riders. There were some great long rides. The waves continued to get bigger to the point where the lifeguards were warning people who did not have a lot of experience to stay out of the rougher areas. The beach is pretty shallow out for about 50 yards and then has a few ups and downs before arriving at a waist deep sand bar where the waves generally break. You will get tossed and turned by the power and the currents, so be prepared or stay in the shallows which can still be a lot of fun.
