Interesting exhibits, especially when they bring in special items. The model train is great. It was a wonderful location for a wedding reception we attended.
While I enjoyed my time at the museum, I want to disclose that it wasn't until I got through the front door that I noticed the "no photographing any artifacts" sign. They were okay with photos of the building, its structures, the architecture, but none of the very interesting things related to railroading. This was almost a deal-breaker for me, but I'm glad I went on the tour anyway. I was given a tour by a very sweet older gentleman; I had thought I was going to be able to self-guide, but it turned out that I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with him and he knew a lot of the local lore. There's not a ton of stuff to see, but since I'm from Boston and didn't know much about the railroad industry, I was eager to learn.
The people there were very nice but in all honesty, there isn't a lot to see here. There is a nice train set at the entrance but that's about it in regards to "fun" things. The renovation work they have done is amazing but you can only look at that for so long. The price is a bit much for what you get but we don't regret going in. The kid enjoyed the train set scavenger hunt but that was about it.
It was very nice to visit a place that used to be so full of life with people traveling here and there. You can almost see and hear them! Another notable feature is the high water marks shown that occurred during the 1951 flood.
We were given a great tour by a very well informed gentleman. He was great. Lot's of info and history. I hope the new outside station exhibit goes well. All the best to the supporters of this museum.
The renovation to this buiding is fabulous. It a great place to hold meetings, conferences or wedding receptions. The area outside is nicely lit at night and beautiful with all the flags flying. The staff will answer any questions you may have and has a list of vendors they work with if you are in need of catering. Highly recommend this for your next function.
I come here often and enjoy the architecture and rich history here. This is also a wonderful place for weddings and parties, especially the photo ops out in the courtyard.
Located just north of downtown Topeka, the Great Overland Station is a vast building that offers a variety for a few hour visit. There are exhibits for children, including a train engineer simulator (non-functional), and permanent displays. There is also an area designated for traveling exhibits which caters to those with different interests. While it sounds cheesy, the only way to described the interior is "beautifully restored." This is no longer an active passenger station, but there are train tracks that run next to the building, so the chances are good that visitors will get to see a moving train up close. There is also a yearly railroad festival at this location. The website is www.greatoverlandstation.com and their telephone is 785.232.5533.
The train station is not only great for train history fans but it also great for Western, Kansas and American history fans. The Building itself is beautifully restored and allows you to let your imagination take over and travel back in time to this station's prime. I also learned about the History of the Harvey girls. Staff is very helpful and they have displays for all ages.
This train station has been lovingly restored and would appeal to any train buffs or people interested in the history of the local area. When I went there was a small exhibition about famous wild west figures whose lives were also connected to Kansas in some way - Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickock and others. Having a family connection myself with the Union Pacific, I found it very interesting.
We had to do a quick tour on our way out of town and our guide did an excellent job hitting the highlights of the station. Beautifully restored with nice exhibits. You could spend about an hour so. We had also seen the restored Union Station in Omaha and this is another great Union Pacific building.
What a beautiful building, very nicely restored. If you enjoy trains and history make sure you visit, several trains still go by everyday. Alot of history inside and out!
There's a great display of every state flag in front of the old station. For the flag lover, it's definitely worth a stop!
Fun place for train loving kids!! Big model train set up to watch. They also have a fun play, adventure area for kids. Santa arrives on the train in December making for a fun afternoon at holiday time. Many special exhibits there throughout the year.
Kinda far out of topeka but worth a visit. The corridor of flags just outside is wonderful to investigate.
