My kids and I love to do factory tours. This one was free and not far from where we were going. It was very interesting to see the process as they take you through the entire facility. It's amazing to see how several parts of the process are done by hand. How did the pickles taste? I have no idea since neither myself or my kids like pickles! The prices in their shop were extremely reasonable. There was a strong scent of spices in the air that tickled your nose/throat and we coughed a little bit in the beginning. Would be go again? If we were in the area, yes. It was worth the stop to us.
I don't know how Frank Sinatra found out about Sechler's but I know he would order a case of pickles every year. I worked there a couple of summers when I was in High School. They are easy to love and my personal favorites are the garlic dills and the classic orange strip sweets. If you like both of those tastes you can get them in one jar of sweet & sour mixed pickles. If your near St. Joe stop in to the factory outlet and check out the 54 variety's of pickles & relishes. How about something different like garlic flavored green tomato's, I know it doesn't sound good but it is. You may want to plan your trip to the outlet and take one of the daily tours as well. They show you every aspect of pickle making, from the cucumbers arriving at the shop to the final product in a jar. Believe me their is a lot that goes into making a good tasting pickle and the people who work here take great pride in the making of the final product. Anytime I go somewhere that pickles are served I can tell if they are Sechler's or not. Sechler's pickles are greener than anybody's. And to me the taste is better too! A great place to learn and to get some pickles at discounted prices. They give tours daily, check their web site for more details.
Everyone told me I had to go the Sechler's Pickle Outlet in Fremont Indiana. Supposedly they have the best pickles, relishes and other items. Well, thank the heavens for samples! They are the worst pickles I have ever tried, very limp, weird color like it had been in a jar for years. I would say to pass this attraction by, not worth spending money on something you are going to just throw away.
